PARENT APATHY DRAWS CENSURE IN DELINQUENCY Her Children Are Not Bad, Mrs. Pickard, Head of Home, Declares. BY CARL THORBAHN Most of the children who come to the Marion County Detention Home are not bad but rather are paying the debt of too little attention from their parents, says Mrs. Anna E. Pickard, superintendent of tiie home. “Fewer children would ever reach the home if their parents would have less parties and maintain a better home life,” she said. We try to treat children, when we get them, as if tht ' our own. One of the chief problems is keeping them busy, lo do this we have a carpenter shop and a school. “We have no funds for this work and any money we get is donated or received from the simple toys which are made in the shop and which are sold to visitors.’’ Shop Instruction a Feature The home tries to develop the talents of each child and outstanding Work has been done by some Recently someone sent a box of molding clay and some of the models turned out by the children are judged as exceptional by Mrs. Pickard. F. J. Loomis, guard and instructor, has charge of the carpenter shop. Here cigar boxes and packing cases are turned into tie holders, various garden toys and whatnots. Mr. Loomis has been able to purchase power-driven jig saws and other tools from the money realized by the sale of these objects. One of Mrs. Pickard’s prizes, with which she demonstrates that the children which come under her care have intelligence, is a poem. This poem was written and dedicated to her by a 16-year-old girl who ran away from home. The girl has since been placed in a private home. Here is the poem: Illumination On a dreary drizzling day As people battled on their way I, in the dim shadows slowly walked Unmindful of the wind, Deep in thought. Lonesome was I, and despondent Weary and tired of living When slowly the clouded sky parted Sending forth long rays of light To illuminate one’s soul in beauty afresh, With hope and faith. No longer was the day cold For that one ray had made it warm; As my steps from listless to sprightly grew, felad was I. in my new found joy, The inspiration of a divine peace. Religious Training Given Bible study and Sunday school play a large part in the school work of the children, Mrs. Pickard said. On Tuesdays and Thursdays they participate in games and singing. “Sometimes children run away from home to come back to us. We try to keep an interest in them and they are free to return to us with their problems,” Mrs. Pickard said Os the 1372 who have passed through the home only 189 children returned the second time, Mrs. Pickard said. HEALTH FOUND AID IN GETTING,- KEEPING JOB Relationship Between Physical Condition, Unemployment Outlined. A man in good health can get a job easier and is surer of holding that job, the Indiana State Medical Association says in a bulletin issued today. The bulletin reports a close relationship exists between unemployment and the worker’s physical conditions. “Physical handicaps reduce efficiency,” the bulletin declares. It urges physicians, economists and welfare foundations to undertake special studies in this field. CLUBS TO HEAR SALLEE Civic Federation Meeting Is to Be Held Friday Night. A. C.
