BEHIND THE MIKE * * * a a a Magic Words on Radio Bring Happiest Birthday to 106-Year-Old Woman.
BY RALPH NORMAN FIFTY-TWO rr.ogic words spoken by NBC's gospel singer, Edward Mar Hugh. made Grammie Berry richer by at least 6152 friends, filled her house with gifts, flowers and letters. And it took only a moment between hymns for the singer to ask listeners to send a birthday greeting to the 106-year-old lady who lives in tiny Stockton Springs, Me. It never will be known how many people have communicated with the aged woman. The Stockton
springs telephone office has been swamped with inquiries, and every day the NBC mail department has a large bundle of letters and packages addressed to Grammie Berry. The 52 words which brought happiness to Grammie Berry were: "Friends, I’ve just heard of a little old lady, Mrs. Caroline Bern - , who lives in the old town of Stockton Springs, Me. She is 106 years old today. I know it would make her very happy to have some of my listeners drop her a card of greeting." a a a Baritone Mar Hugh, known to a large NBC audience as the Gospel Singer, knows by heart 2000 sacred songs of all demoninations, has sung 3000 different hymns since he began broadcasting 'wo years ago. Each month he reads 2000 pieces of mail. Born in Scotland, he labored hard, worked in Montreal railroad and shipping yards, finally reached Boston and a department store job. An enthusiastic response to a trial broadcast made him a regular NBC (WJZ at 9:15) weekday feature. Whenever he can, he likes to leave New York for his Newton (Mass.) home, where his diversions include wild bird feeding, salmon and trout fishing. Irish-Scotch, he likes to tell jokes on both sides, but grows very serious in the studio. a a a FRED ALLEN deserves a brass medal for making prevaricators of most radio editors. Unfortunately for all, Town Hall programs seem to have an uncanny way of blowing up at the last minute, upsetting not only Fred and Portland and radio scribes, but listeners as well. Last week Fred had to build up anew program late Wednesday afternoon when Jack Benny’s doctor ordered him to stay in bed. Jack and Mary Livingston were to have made a guest appearance at Town Hall. To further complicate Mr. Allen’s relations with press and pub lie, his much-heralded amateur, “Talkative Tom," a chattering Mynah bird, also failed to turn up. The most we can say now is that Mr. Allen promises to split infinitives with the educated pet of a retired New York fireman at R, NBC-WEAF (WLW), so if the bird chooses to roost elsewhere tonight. blame Allen or the bird, but not us. a a a Sitting In the front row at Town Halt last, week was a man whose hearty laugh kept getting into the microphone above all others. At the end of the show, he apologized for his loud laughter. “That's all right," Fred told him. “If we were disturbing you, you should have hollered out, and we could have made it much less funny.” a a a Believe it or not" and "As Strange as It Seems.” Ray Noble, now a topnotch dance band conductor and composer, had no band of his own until a year ago after he came to America. The tremendous sale of recordings by "Ray Noble’s New Mayfair Dance Orchestra" first brought him fame in this country, but when London reporters tried to find the band, there wasn’t any. Whenever Noble had new music to play, he simply called up the best players he knew, rehearsed them, made his records, and then disbanded the group. Today for his CBS iWFBM) R:3O. broadcasts, the conductor has his own musical organization, selected for its ability and its rapacity for hard work. Mr. Noble is to introduce his second new tune written since he came here. “The Touch of Your Lips," tonight. a a a NBC-WEAF are to present two talks tonight, one at 9:15 by Rep. Joseph P. Monaghan of Montana on th powers of the Supreme Court, and another at 9:30 by

Music BY JAMES THRASHER ' I ''HREE works of Lazare Saminsky. contemporary composer, author and champion of Hebrew music, are to be presented by the League of Composers, of which he is a director, at 1:30 tomorrow on the NBC Music Guild program over WIRE. Saminsky did not begin serious musical study until he was 24, when he entered the composition classes of RimskyKorsakoff at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. His works include four symphonies and as many operas, as well as choral works and miscellaneous music for orchestra, solo voices and instruments. Saminsky is director of music at Temple Emanu-El in New' York. a a a In (he style of Bach’s day is the "Introduction and Allegro” for string quartet and orchestra of Sir Edward Elgar, to be played bv the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra at 2:15 tomorrow under the direction of the British conductor, Sir Hamilton Harty. Like the “Brandenburg" Concertos of Bach and the “Concerti Grossi" of Handel and Vivaldi, this composition employs a group of instruments instead of a single soloist with the orchestra. The work, written in 1905, was conceived during one of Elgar’s vacations in Wales, and its principal theme is of a distinctly Welsh character. The program also is to include the 102nd Symphony of Haydn, and is to he broadcast on the NBC-WJZ (WIRE) network. a a a ROSSINI’S “Una Voce Poco Fa” from “The Barber of Seville.” is to be the featured number on Lily Pons’ CBS (WFBM) broadcast at 8 tonight. An aria beloved of every prima donna, its words are those of a letter WTitten by the vivacious Rosina. heroine of the opera, to her absent Lindoro.

END REPORTED TO PARTY FIGHT IN VANDERBURGH Settlement of Democratic Strife Comes After Leaders Confer. Timex .Special EVANSVILLE, Inri., Feb. 19. Factional strife that has disrupted the Vanderburgh County Democratic party for more than five years was said to have been settled today. Announcement of a reunited organization. determined to keep this district in the New Deal column, was made after a conference between Mayor William R. Dress and Val Nolan. United States District Attorney at Indianapolis, recognized leaders of the warring groups. “We’ve settled our differences once and for all.” the mayor declared after the parley. “We’ll now move in a united front to stop petty bickering." Workers Hold Conference Other party workers who attended the conference u'ere John K. Jennings. district WPA director; Walter Foley, county Democratic chairman, Circuit Judge Spencer and Controller Bosse. Most important step planned by the six is creation of a party control board or patronage committee. This body is to pass on state convention delegates and primary candidates. This will result, observers say, in placing the party under strict machine control. “II any one wants to run for an office without approval of the committee, he’ll just have to go for himself,” Mayor Dress asserted. Personnel of the patronage committee was not discussed, but it was assumed that those attending the conference would be among its members. $29,098 AWARDED BANK Judgment Against Subsidiaries Is ‘ Confirmed by Court.
