BEHIND THE MIKE a a m a a a Frank Fay Lands Own Contract Through Work on Rudy Vallee's Program.
BY RALPH NORMAN T> UDY VALLEE can not be accused of failure to contribute new personalities to radio. His Variety Hour, NBC-WEAF (WLWi at 7, is a testing ground for new talent. If the newcomers click,
they may be signed to other programs backed bv Rudy’s sponsor. Rudy's newest contribution to comedy is Frank Fay. Fay first was heard on the Variety Hour two months ago. The audience liked him. This week he was signed for 13 more perform-

ances, and in July is to get his own program. Fay easily is 1936’s outstanding new radio star. Each year the New York WorldTelegram poll of radio editors has given a Vallce-introduced performer the “outstanding new star” award. Joe Penner won it in 1933, Helen Jepson in 1934, and Bob Burns last year. o n Bob Burns now has a spot on B>ng Crosby’s Music Hall, NBCWEAF (WLW) at 9. Bing's guest stars tonight are to be Spencer Tracy, in a dramatic sketch, and Alice Faye, who will sing with Bing. am a James L. Kilgallen, formermanaging editor of The Indianap-
olis Times, and Russ Westover, cartoonist of “T illie the Toiler,” are to be interviewed at 2 tomorrow afternoon by Ken Ellington over WFB M. Mr. Kilgallen covered the H auptman trial, the HallMills case, D e m o c r atic and Republics n national

Although convicted of larceny, the boy requested the state’s attorney to get the Dec. 4 script of One Man’s Family. He says lv was at home that evening, and remembers the dramatization. The boy is to be given another hearing. If his knowledge of the story checks with the script, he may win freedom. a a a When Maj. Bowes runs out of network cities, Indianapolis may be an "honored” city, privileged to vote by telephone. The Major started going through his network cities in order of population. Next Sunday, the forty-eighth, is Schenectady. Eventually, of course, he will run out of network cities. He then will change to non-network towns. area, the city will sooner or later share the Major’s spotlight. What should Indianapolis send the Major? There's something to think about. a a a How many listeners, we wonder, were disappointed last night when illness kept Jack Benny from his guest appearance on Fred Allen's Town Hall Tonight? The change from California sunshine to New York's bitter cold apparently d J xn’t do Jack any good. The guest appearance is to be made later. a a a IF the opihion of the British Broadcasting Cos. prevails, the voice of King Edward VIII soon will be carried to all the world. . . . jcitizens of Lakeland. Fla., presented Maj. Bowes with a lot, hoping he will build a home there. . . . Irving Berlin paid SSOOO to follow by telephone the filming of “Follow the Fleet”; music from this new motion picture is being introduced by radio this week . . . the Voice of Experience has signed a long-term contract with his sponsor; he will be on the air at least two and one-half more years. . . . the Saturday night operetta programs are to be replaced with a serialized version of the Ziegfeld “Follies,” with Fannie Brice playing the leading role. Music BY JAMES THRASHER THE greatest, perhaps the only “legitimate,’’ guitar virtuoso today is the Spaniard Andres Segovia, who gave a Town Hall recital in New York Sunday and who is to appear as guest artist with Bing Crosby over an NBC-WEAF (WLW) network at 9 tonight. Though currently associated with Hawaiians and hillbillies, the guitar was a recognized instrument long before Senor Segovia rediscovered it. Paganini, violin wizard, practiced the guitar assiduously and wrote much music for it. It was the only instrument played by the composer Berlioz. In the unhappiness of his last years, Berlioz destroyed most of his letters, manuscripts and othermusical effects, regaining only his guitar, the gift of Paganini, and a baton presented to him by Mendelssohn. a a a Mrs. Elizabeth. Spragvv® Coolidge, America’s foremost patroness of chamber music, and originator of the Pittsfield and Library of Congress Festivals, is to appear as guest speaker and composer on the “Music Is My Hobby” broadcast at 7 tonight, through NBC-WJZ (WIRE), Her quartet in E Minor is to be performed by the Manhattan String Quartet. a a a RACHMANINOFF’S latest work for piano and orchestra, the “Variations on a Theme of Paganini,” (the same theme employed byBrahms in his “Paganini Variations” for piano) is to be presented by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, with Sandor Vas, soloist, at 7:30 tonight on the NBC-WJZ (WIRE) network. Other selections are to include “La Procession du Rocio,” by Turina, and “In a Summer Garden,” by Delius. a a a Dr. Walter Damrosch is to discuss the use of percussion instruments and the march form of writing during his NBC Music Appreciation Hour at 10 tomorrow morning over NBCWIRE. As illustrations, the orchestra will play the Scherzo from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, a portion of Tschaikowsky’s Symphony No. 4, and marches by Schubert, Rirnskykorsakoff, Herbert and Grainger. WOMEN TO INITIATE 12 Relief Corps to Hold Ceremony at Fort Friendly Tuesday. Ma.i. Robert Anderson Womens Relief Corps No. 44 is to initiate 12 candidates at a meeting at Fort Friendly on Tuesday. After a dinner. Louis Burk, corps president, is to preside over a meeting of state officers. Officers who are expected to attend are; Ocie Tumie, president; Christie Hobbs, Bedford, secretary; Rose Sutton. Fort Wayne, treasurer; Florence Ritz, Lizton. and Mrs. Kate Taylor, Bedford, councilors.
