RAIL ELEVATION FIGHT REOPENED ON SOUTH SIDE South Side Civic League to Ask U. S. for Funds Again. Determined to continue their 15year fight, South Side Civic League members today planned to ask government agencies again for funds to elevate Belt Railroad tracks. This decision was reached at a meeting last night after Joseph P. McNamara, deputy attorney general, told the group the State Highway Department had offered to share its WPA funds for part of the grade separation at Madisonav, if the city and county could provide the icmainder. John C. Kirch, president, Slid the organization was at the "end of its rope.” He read several discouraging letters from Federal authorities, including one from Wayne Coy, WPA administrator. Mr. Coy said the project was not approved by the controller of the Treasury because of the illegality cf doing Fedefal work on private property. He saw little chance for the South Side to receive any Federal funds for this work. SCHOOL SCOUTS ELECTOFFICERS Shortridge Group Studies Conservation Merit Badge Work. New officers of the Shortridge Scout Club, named at the first meeting of the spring semester are: Malcolm McDermott, president; Bob Harger, vice president; Fred Likely, secretary and Charles Breunig, assistant secretary. Conservation merit badge work is the subject in which the Scouts now are interested, and under Joel Hadley, sponsor of the group and vice principal of Shortridge, members are preparing to pass the requirements. The school Senate has elected officers for the spring semester. They are Arthur Northrup, president; Bert Servaas, first vice president; Lucy Meurer, second vice president; Kimm Greenough, reading clerk, and Rosemary Treanor, secretary. In the Senate members take the names of present United States Senators and all of the proceedings are patterned after those of the national body. Bills are introduced and voted upon by the Senators.
