MORGAN FEARS SCARLET FEVER OUTBREAK HERE
Reports Indicate Disease Is Above Normal Level, Says Physician. BY TOM OCHILTREE Predictions of an increase in scarlet fever cases here during the next two months were made today by Dr. Herman G. Morgan, Health Board secretary, as he organized all forces at his command to r.hec the disease. Eighty-flve cases have been reported to city health officers so far this month, a considerable increase above normal. This last outbreak, coupled with the fact that the disease held its grip here throughout 1935, is cause of concern in the department. Because of the large number of "carriers” capable of transmitting the disease, control of this malady is extremely difficult, Dr. Morgan said. Records show that children especially are susceptible to these germs. It is practically impossible to isolate these "carriers,” he said. They can not be detected through cultures, he explained. Since scarlet fever is a streptococcic disease, and since almost one person in six will show "strep” traces during winter months, it is like trying to And a needle in a haystack to trace the source of the trouble, Mr. Morgan asserted. Many Cases Overlooked “Contrary to general belief, there are many true cases of scarlet fever which are believed merely to be attacks of tonsillitis,” Dr. Morgan pointed out. "Sometimes there is no rash in these cases. "All attacks of sore throat accompanied by high temperature and other evidences of toxemia should be viewed with suspicion,” he added. “This particularly should be done in homes where children and young adults might be subjected to exposure.” While scarlet fever is not attended by as high a mortality rate as some other contagious maladies, it frequently leaves the victim with severe after-effects. "Within the last few years,” Dr. Morgan said, “a serum has been perfected for prevention and treatment of scarlet fever. It has not been universally adopted, however, by all physicians and health departments, principally for the reason that effects following it.-> administration were serious in some cases. Serum Improved "Within recent months advances have been made in removing toxic products from the serum,” he said. “Experience with so-called globulinfree serum apparently offers a better agent for both treatment and prevention.” The local health department now believes the serum can be given without danger, and Dr. Morgan thinks children should be protected by inoculation. Parents are asked to consult their physicians relative to this matter.

A Grave Mistake for a Mother to Make GIVING CHILD UNKNOWN REMEDIES WITHOUT ASKING DOCTOR FIRST
GIVING your child a medicine or remedy you don’t know all about without asking your family doctor first is a bad risk for any mother to take. Doctors and child authorities say health, and sometimes life itself, depends on this. So when you’re offered a “bargain” in a remedy for your child; ask your doctor before

chardists today were waiting to make estimates of damage. Held indoors in the grip of subzero weather, they are just beginning to learn the extent of harm done to crops. Exact conditions of the trees will remain hidden until thawing weather arrives. Possibility that half the peach orchards in the county, more than 2000 acres, may be ruined by the cold weather was seen today by H. S. Benson, county farm agent. Approximately 2000 acres of apples with an estimated crop valued
