Troupe Here for Opening of 'Vanities' Romance, Marriage of Two Featured Performers Is Recalled. In the cast of Earl Carroll’s “Vanities,” which arrived here yesterday for its opening on the Indiana stage tomorrow, were Mr. and Mrs. Buster West—the Mrs. of the combination being Lucille Page, featured dancer. Buster, a comedian, knows r* few hooflng tricks himself. He used to dress in the same room with a kangaroo act, and later became one of the ranking hoofers in the Big Time until he turned his gift '.’or backstage repartee to account. The Buster-Lucille marriage, was one of those happy romances born of tears in the depression era. One one gloomy week of that dark period they were playing in a theater in Buffalo, each doing solo acts. The:, had never met before. “It was the saddest audience I ever saw,” remarked Buster. Audience Silent Lucille was first on the program, and Buster, standing in the wings, thought she was great. But she didn’t draw a ripple from the crowd. Crestfallen, she walked from the stage, and Buster, feeling sorry for her said, “Never mind, kid, I’ll make them laugh. Then everything will be all right.” “Don’t be fresh,” she exploded. Buster took the stage. “I went out there,” recalls the dancer, “and did I make ’em laugh? Say, I did everything I knew, and all they did was scowl, even the drummer in the orchestra pit. When I came off, Lucille was waiting for me. 'Smarty’ was all she said.” They went to a far corner and had a good cry together, which was the budding of a romance. Now with the “Vanities,” they seek an apartment where Lucille cooks the meals, and happily look back on the days which were not so palmy. Likes to Work in Wood Pranchot Tone finds relaxation from the screen in wood-working, for which he has a complete tool bench at home. He recently finished a set of furniture for the garden of his Brentwood home. Classics Aid Aetor Larry Crabbe, featured in Zane Grey outdoor romance pictures, finds a study of the classics an aid to his work. Larry's current picture is "Drift Fence.” Rogers Taught Stone to Ropfe Fred Stone, veteran Broadway actor, learned fancy roping from Will Rogers, who later became his best friend.

This Movie Kiss May Be Frigid, But It's Performed By Experts Indian Couple in ‘Next Tima We Love’ Keeps Cameras Waiting While They Warm Up to ‘Clinch.’ HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 16.—Movie fans are to see the coldest kiss on record when .Margaret Sullavan’s latest picture, “Next Time We Love,” comes to the screen this month.
This kiss is not given by the star or her leading man, James Stewart. It is exchanged by two experts who, according to scientific reports, spend most of their lives kissing. They are Miss and Mr. Osphormenus Trichopterus, alias Miss and Mr. Gourami, but to the layman they are just a couple of kissing fish. The finny osculators are the only ones in America: pure white albinos, three inches long. When they kiss they look like two small mouthed vases, set mouth to mouth. And appropriately, their fins resemble handles of a loving cup. They come from India, and belong to a retired millionaire who values them at $350. A reproduction of the upper corridor of the New York Aquarium was built for the short scene in which the Gouramis appear. On their tank was a data placard which read “Osphormenus Trichopterus ... Kissing Gourami . . . Habitat, India . . . Rare Stilt or Ladder Fish . . . Builds bubble nest at surface . . . Spends most of its life kissing as a prelude to nuptials arrangements.” In spite of the glowing advance notices, the fish turned coy when they faced the camera. With a display of temperament unique even in movie stars, they refused to kiss. Desperate, director Edward Griffith

posted a day and night camera in front of the tank, but it took a 48hour vigil before their patience was rewarded.

Freddie Sends Photo to King Young Bartholomew Plays Royal Film Role. Timet Special HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 16.—A boy king in pictures made a graceful gesture in deference to a boy king in reality. On the occasion of the final taking of scenes for “Professional Soldier,” Freddie Bartholomew, playing the role of King Peter 11, autographed a portrait of himself in royal uniform. With much pride, the child star then dispatched the photo to His Majesty King Peter of Yugoslavia. Surrounded by his studio court, including his co-star, Victor McLaglen, little Freddie inscribed the following* salute to the child monarch in Europe: “With best wishes to His Majesty King Peter of Yugoslavia, from ‘King Peter the Second' —Freddie Bartholomew.” The portrait was accompanied by a letter from the British star to King Peter, who had requested the autographed picture. Toured Europe in Concerts Immediately upon leaving college in Malta, Joseph Calleia, possessor of a fine tenor voice, made a concert tour of Europe. Actress Collects Toy Elephants Madge Evans’ hobby is collecting toy elephants of all sizes. She has more than 200.

Timet Special HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 16. —The crash of a market pool wiped out a millionaire and gave to the screen anew character actor, Charlie Grapevin, appearing currently in “Ah, Wilderness!” and “The Petrified Forest." He was a member of many California clubs and organizations and had not worked for six years following his retirement from the stage.
