THE RADIO WAVES Wired Radio Ready for Homes; Is Not Regarded as Broadcast Threat.

WITH television lurking in the wings, another trend in rqdio threatens to burst upon the stage to provide entertainment for the listening public. Call it what you will, it is wired radio, anew adaptation of “canned music.” Let it be understood now that wired radio never will sweep the country, but its practicability already has been proven, and it may be a stepping stone to greater development of television. In short, loudspeakers are to be placed in the home as easily and quickly as telephones are installed. The listener has three switches which will bring different types or mus:c—the Victor Herbert tea-room kind, semi-classical or jazz.

There would be no commercial announcements, no static and no speeches. There would not even be introductions to the music which would be available throughout the day. The music would emanate from one central sending station in each city and would be electrically recorded. Whether such broadcasting is to become an institution rests with the public, which would subscribe to the service much as it pays for using telephones. Sponsors, therefore, would be eliminated. The system is used in Cleveland, but the fact remains that it is never to be a threat to radio because so many rural districts and small cities will not have access to it. Also, it is meant to be heard while at work or at bridge, not to be listened to while concentrating. The Major Bowes, philharmonic, symphonic and featured programs always will have an appeal to the radio audienefc. Wired radio may be the forerunner to television, as utility companies have perfected apparatus and cables which would carry wired images into homes. a a a I.upe Veler, film star, returned from England, is to be a guest performer on Rudy Vallee’s program tonight at 7 on the NBCWEAF network. The program, already replete with two famous comedians—Frank Fay and Bert Labr —is to feature a dramatic sketch with Miss Velez in the leading role. Mr. Fay, although no stranger In comedy circles, had been ignored by radio until introduced four weeks ago by Mr. Vallee, who also gave a radio start to Joe Penner. Mr. Fay’s remarks have a malicious and sarcastic tang in contrast to the endless ' goodnatured humor of most laugh provokers. Bert Lahr has been heard on the Vallee programs before and is currently appearing with him in George White’s “Scandals.” a a a FORMER President Hoover and Col. Frank Knox, mentioned as a possible candidate for the Republican nomination for President, are to assail the policies of President Roosevelt and the New* Deal over the air tonight. The former executive's speech at Lincoln, Neb., entitled “Agriculture and the New Deal,” is to be broadcast over the Columbia network at 8:30. Col. Knox, publisher of the Chicago Daily News, is to reply to Edward A. Filene, Boston merchant who recently spoke over the Columbia network on the subject, “The President and Our Newspapers.” His address to the
