THE RADIOWAVES Girl Stars Being Drawn Back to Air Waves One by One, Lists Show
\T the turn of the year, Kate Smith stood out as the only regular featured songstress from last year's seven leading girl singers, hut the remainder of the list is being drawn back to the air. Jane Froman last season's winner, has had a few guest star appearances, but has made no effort to land an extended series. She is to return to New York in a few weeks for guest performances on "Hit Parade,” Ben Bernie, and six Paul Whiteman programs, after which she plans to go to Hollywood for two pictures.
Harriet Hilliard has rejoined Ozzie Nelson's Sunday broadcast, and Ethel Shutta has returned to the air after an extended tour with her husband, George Olsen. Gertrude Niesen recently returned to radio following prolonged engagements in night clubs, while Annette Henshaw plans to construct a skit, with herself as star. Ruth Etting retired for a world cruise The Boswell Sisters, all three of whom now are married, have disappeared almost completely from the spotlight. u u a Little Jack Little, popular whispering baritone and song composer, has returned to the NBC network for nightly broadcasts with his orchestra. He is to be heard tonight at 10:30 on the first of his new series, and is scheduled by WIRE Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. B B B Benay Venuta, CBS singer who Is appearing in Chicago with "Anything Goes,’’ is to be heard from the WBBM studios this eiternoon at 5 in a program of songs that is to be carried by WFBM. BUB THE folk story in opera is to be explained during Howard Barlow’s "Understanding Opera” program at 5:35 today via CBS. The broadcast is to be devoted to Rimsky - Korsakoff's "Le Coq d'Or.” B B B Fritz! SchefT, Lucy Monroe and Frank Munn are to be starred in the Lavender and Old Lace program tonight at 7 over CBS and WFBM. Munn has been on the air 12 consecutive years. Gustav Haenschen’s orchestra will supply the instrumental melody. B B B A tiger hunt in mid-ocean is to be the topic of the threeminute thriller on Phillips Lord’s program tonight at 7 over the NBC-WEAF network. Leo Reisman's orchestra also is to be heard. B b b * LAWRENCE TIBBETT is to offer a program of opera excerpts, familiar classics and several selections of lighter numbers at 7:30 tonight over the Columbia chain. He is to open the program with the "Toreador Song.” The noted baritone once had to sing this number at midnight on the California desert to identify himself when mistaken as a fugitive bank robber. He sang a duet with one of his recordings of the song. B B B Edgar Guest is to be welcomed back to Chicago tonight at 7:30 by the Welcome Valley Club over the NBC-WJZ network. His programs recently have originated in Hollywood, where he has been working in films, Lee Sims and Ilnmay Bailey, piano and song team, are scheduled to make a repeat appearance as guest star on Ben Bernie's program tonight at 8 over NBC and WLW, resulting from the fan mail which followed their first appearance. B B B PEE WEE HUNT is to sing "I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter,” and Deane Janis is to be heard singing “I Built a Dream One Day” as features on Glen Gray's Caravan period tonight at 8 over Columbia and WFBM. Walter O'Keefe, the Broadway hill-billy, and his stooges are to present a brace of nitwit drama sketches. B B B Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians have been selected to provide the dance music at President Roosevelt’s birthday ball in Washington Jan. 30. The event is the epitome of all birthday celebrations throughout the nation that night and is to be attended by the President’s family and high government officials. By United Prcut CHICAGO. Jan. 14. The Republican National Committee will spend $1,000,000 on radio broadcasts before and during the 1936 presidential campaign, Thomas G. Sabin, director of the radio division of the committee, said today. Mr. Sabin opened Middle Western headquarters here and prepared for a series of broadcasts.

STATE’S CCC TOTAL SMALLEST IN AREA 811 Enrolees Find Private Work in December, Report Shows. Time* Special FORT HAYES, 0., Jan. 14.—Indiana’s CCC enrollment is 7155, smallest of four states in the Fifth Corps Area, according to figures released at headquarters here today. At the same time it was stated that 811 enrollees found private employment during December. Other state enrollments are Ohio 13,051, West Virginia 8276, and Kentucky 11,641. MEDICAL SOCIETY MEETS Intestinal Tract Problems to Be Discussed Here Tonight. Medical problems associated with the gastro-intestinal tract are to be discussed at a meeting of the Indianapolis Medical Society at 8:15 tonight in the Athenaeum. Speakers are to be Drs. E. O. Asher, J. W. Ricketts, T. B. Johnson, Ross C. Ottinger, Walter F. Kelly and H. S. Leonard. Hip Fractured in Fall Mrs. Elizabeth Metsker, 43, of 2305 College-av, is in fair condition in City Hospital today following a fall last night at her home :n which she suffered a broken hip.

Song Leaders Go to Society Move Makes Future Music Available for Radio. A number of outstanding song writers have enrolled under the banner of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, making available to radio programs all tunes to be produced by them in the future. The composers are George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Arthur Schwartz, Howard Dietz, Sigmund Romerg, Vernon Duke, Ira Gershwin and Noel Coward. Many of their song hits in current shows are available, but their new move does not affect restricted songs by Warner Bros.’ publishing houses. They have signed contracts with Chappell & Cos., music publishers, who are to distribute forthcoming pieces. NEW TRIAL ORDERED FOR ELKHART OFFICER Supreme Court Rules Policeman Not Guilty of Larceny. The Indiana Supreme Court has ordered anew trial for Walter Domer, former Elkhart police officer, who was paroled from the State Prison after serving more than a year on a larceny conviction. Domer was convicted of larceny by trick, when he was alleged to have retained S4O paid him as an intoxication fine. The evidence showed Domer frequently accepted money to be applied on fines in City Court as a part of his duties. The high court held that Domer might have been guilty of embezzlement of public funds, but that he could not have been guilty of larceny by trick. CLUB MEMBERS TO BE INSTRUCTED IN LIONISM Twenty-Six Men to Be Honored at Luncheon Tomorrow. Twenty-six men who have been members of the Lion’s Club since 1933 are to be instructed in Lionism at a luncheon tomorrow noon at the Washington. Paul Summers and Edward F. Kepner are in charge of the program.
