Irish Turn in Upset Verdict Against Pitt Notre Dame Net Marksmen Hand Panthers Second Loss of Week. 7 i tnri Special PITTSBURGH. Pa., Jan. 11—One of the East's outstanding basketball teams, the Panthers of Pittsburgh, tried to get reorganized today, and find out what happened when Notre Dame came to town. Playing like so many buzz-saws, the Irish outran, outpassed and outshot the Pittsburgh boys last night to gain a 43-to-35 triumph in a bitterly contested encounter played before 3500 fans. The Panthers were all the, more startled, since it was the second setback of the week for them. Carnegie Tech snapped their 21-game winning streak last Tuesday. Last night's victory was the ninth in 11 starts for the Ramblers. After taking an early lead, Pittsburgh was ahead, 20 to 19, at intermission. Paul Thomas Nowak, Notre Dame’s sophomore center, then found the range and led his mates to victory. Playing the full 40 minutes, Nowak accounted for seven field goals and two free throws, or a total of 16 points. Roderick, substitute forward, looked best for the losers with five baskets. The speedy basketball squad of Central Normal remained at the top of the Indiana Conference today by virtue of a decisive victory over Hanover. Playing on their own floor here last night, the Purple Warriors won 33 to 25, and remained undefeated. After jumping into an early 12-to-l lead, the Danville boys had the Panthers on the defensive during the entire tilt. Hargraves and Kibbler were able to pace a Hanover counter attack that cut the Purple Warriors margin to 19 to 12 at half-time. Then, with three minutes left to play, the Hilltoppers closed the gap to one point, but Williams, Central Normal forward, counted three successive field goals from under the basket to clinch the tilt. Lindstrom Given Release by Cubs (Reprinted From I-ate Times Saturday) Ji'l I tiilril /’res* CHICAGO. Jan. 10. —Freddie Lindstrom, outfielder and third baseman, today was given his unconditional release by the Chicago Cubs. Lindstrom, a Chicago boy who had a long, successful career with both the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Pirates, came to the Cubs only last season in one of the major deals of the 1934 winter trading. The Cubs’ explanation for the release was that Lindstrom is too valuable a man to be warming the bench as a substitute and the Cubs have plenty of young talent for both third base and the outfield, the position Lindstrom fills. Consequently he is given the opportunity to place himself where he can play regularly, the Cubs' office said. Heavy Action Scheduled for Big Ten Loop All Western Conference Teams to Play; Five More Tilts Monday. BY WINTHROP LYMAN United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO. Jan. 11.—Renewal of the scoring duel between Bob Kessler of Purdue and Bill Haarlow of Chicago will provide an added attraction in the Big Ten basketball race tonight. Haarlow. winner of the individual scoring title last season, and Kessler, runner-up will oppose each other when the Maroons and Boilermakers tangle in the Chicago fieldhouse. Boilermakers the Choice Purdue is expected to have little difficulty in turning back the Maroons despite the fact the latter have a much better balanced club that a year ago. Chicago is likely to cause anyone trouble if Paul Amundsen, its tall sophomore center, learns how to shoot. His failure to score from the field was responsible for Chicago’s defeat by Wisconsin. The most hotly contested game on tonight's schedule is expected at Madison, where Wisconsin and Illinois, co-champions with Purdue last season, will be battling to keep in the race. Each lost its opening game and then came back to win its second. Northwestern, with an auspicious preliminary record, will open its Conference schedule against Indiana at Bloomington. Three sophomores will be in the Wildcat starting lineup, according to Coach Dutch Lonborg. Bucke3 T es Are Favored Ohio State, because of its dazzling speed and sharpshooting captain, Warren Whitlinger, should be able to conquer lowa at lowa City. It will be a battle royal, however, if the Hawkeyes display the form they showed in whipping Illinois. Michigan's giants anticipate no difficulty with Minnesota at Ann Arbor. The Gophers have the worst record of any Big Ten factor in the pennant chase. Five more games are scheduled for Monday night. They are: Chicago at Indiana, lowa at Wisconsin, Michigan at Purdue. Minnesota at Northwestern and Ohio State at Illinois.
