effects of two poisons which cause many deaths each year through suicide or accident, it wax announced to the medical scientists meeting with the American Association for the Advancement of Science here. The two poisons are the extremely deadly cyanide and the less deadly barbiturate sleeping powders, such as luminal and veronal, which nevertheless cost hundreds of lives when taken accidentally or wilfully. Picrotoxin is the drug that fights overdoses of the sleeping powders. Dr. Koppanyi assisted Washington physicians in recalling from otherwise certain death persons who had taken overdoses of the powders with suicidal intent. Isfs Amvl Nitrate Cyanide poisoning is combated by Dr. Chen with a mixture of amyl nitrate, sodium nitrite and sodium thiosulphate. This trio of drugs rapidly counteracts the deadly pois-
onous effects of the cyanide when administered by injection into the veins. Picrotoxin Is a bitter-tasting white crystalline powder found in the famed fish berries of the East Indies, where it gets its name because the natives use it to poison fish. It is a powerful stimulant. Its former uses were almost invariably the wrong ones epilepsy, St. Vitus' dance and conditions of convulsions. INSANE WOMAN SUSPECTED OF DROWNING BABY New York Hospital Parolee Leers at Anguish of Child’s Parents. By United Breen NEW YORK, Jan. 6.—A toothless, giggling woman, paroled three months ago from an insane asylum where she had been confined 20 years was held today under suspi-
cion of drowning a 10-months-old infant. The missing baby, Jacob Harowitz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Harowitz, was kidnaped in his perambulator yesterday from in front of an East Side tenement. More than 400 policemen and thousands of neighborhood residents searched the district last night. While searchers dragged the East River and investigated vacant buildings and lots, Gussie Friedman, 45. laughed through leering lips at the moans of Jacob’s mother and the tears of his father, and gibbered unintelligible answers to police questions. Police believed Gussie pushed the Harowitz baby, asleep in a carriage gay with red and blue blankets, into the river. Suspicion fastened on her because she had been found, less than an hour after little Jacob disappeared, wheeling another infant with fren-
zied speed toward the river. Four high school boys hunting Jacob stopped her less than a block from the water front. Gussie surrendered the child. Doris Maslin, 2, without a struggle. “You can have the brat,’' she screamed, and then laughed. DEMOCRATS TO GATHER Howard County Jackson Day Fete Set for Tomorrow. Time * Special KOKOMO. Ind..
