GRANT COUNTY FARMS TOPPED BY RURAL GARS 2749 Country Residents Own 3118 Autos, Survey Shows. 1 1me* Special MARION, Ind., Jan. I—The automobiles they drive out-number Grant County farmers by 369, according to preliminary figures in a survey conducted here by PWA workers. A fact-gathering corps which visited each of 2749 farms today can support the claim that rural life rapidly is acquiring the ease and convenience of modern urban exist-* ence. Extension and development of transportation facilities, electricity, heating equipment and a variety of mechanical devices serve to lessen the hardships once ascribed to country life. Grant County farmers, the survey indicates, operate a total of 3118 motor vehicles, all but 478 of which are pleasure cars. The others are trucks. Tractors number 1015, 11 of which are steam driven. This is more than a fourth of 3965 horses and mules in the county. Seven of every nine own a radio, providing the county a total of 2100 sets. Hot and cold water are available in 514 rural homes, 296 affording up-to-date baths and 255 are furnace-heated. For large scale farming 115 mechanical corn pickers are in use and 61 combination wheat harvestthreshers operated. Individual power plar/s are maintained on 185 farms, while another 509 secure their electrical energy from extended power lines. The survey, when completed as part of a state-wide program, will provide complete information on Indiana farm modernization, both in and outside the home. I.—A single warehouse fire last February marred an otherwise outstanding record for the Logansporl fire department during 1935, Chief William Claiborne revealed today. Accounting for $20,000 of the year’s $25,700 total, the one blaze almost doubled 1934 losses of $10,564. The department answered 320 alarms in 1935 compared with 409 the preceding year.
