12 ON BUTLER STAFF ARE TO ATTEND MEETS Educational Conferences in Nation Attracting Faculty Members. Butler University Is to be represented by 12 faculty membeis at educational meetings during the Christmas holidays to be held at various points in the nation. Members who are to attend sessions of the Modern Language Association at Cincinnati. Dec. 30-Jan. 1. are Dean Gino A Ratti, Dr. and Mrs. Thor G. Wesenberg, Miss Esther Renfrew, Miss Florence I. Morrison and Dr. John S. Harrison. Dr. Ray C Friesner is to be the Butler delegate to meetings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Association of University Professors at St. Louis, Mo., Dec. 30-Jan. 4. Dr. Henry G. Nester also is to attend the sessions. Leland R. Smith. 3utler librarian, is to go to Chicago, Dec. 30-Jan. 1, for the annual meeting of the American Library Association. Prof. Charles H Walters, debate coach, also is to go to Chicago for the yearly conference of the National Association of Teachers of Speech. It is to be held Dec. 30-Jan. 1. J. Douglas Perry, professor of journalism, is to visit in Washington, D. C., and attend conferences of the National Association of Journalism, Dec. 26-30. Meetings of the American Economics Association at New York are to attract Dr. M. G. Bridenstine during the holidays. CONTRACTS AWARDED FOR NEW COURT HOUSE Others to Follow for Building at Kokomo. Times Special KOKOMO, Ind., Dec. 25.—First award of a series of contracts for materials needed in constructing a Courthouse here were announced today by Howard County 'commissioners. Additional bids are to be opened Monday. Successful bidders, all of Kokomo, and the materials to be supplied, include W. O. Bassett, cement, per barrel, $2.13; Armstrong-Lan-don, reinforcing steel, $1107.64, and Dye Lumber Cos., lumber and nails, $1152.

13 HOOSIERS ATTEND ARIZONA UNIVERSITY Five of Students Are Registered From Indianapolis. Times Special TUCSON, Ariz., Dec. 25.—Five of 13 Indiana students attending the University of Arizona here, some of whom are at home for the holidays, reside in Indianapolis, according to records of the registrar. In the Indianapolis group are Miss Dorothy Branden, Richard W. Cline, Paul R. Collins, Donald C. Duok and John Wesley Gibbs. Others from the Hoosier state are Ned Marlin, Hugh J. Robertson and Jack Harry Shroof, all of South Bend; Misses Marguerite Lays and Jane Katherine Ingle, Evansville; Robert Horton, Huntington, and Stanley H. Boggs, Mentone. YOUTH FREED ON BAIL High School Senior Said to Have Confessed Extortion Plot. Bp United Brens EVANSVILLE, Ind., Dec. 25. Victor Ernst, 17, who is said to have admitted an attempt to extort SSO from a grocer here was free today under SIOOO bond provided by relatives. The Reitz High School senior was arrested when he picked up a dummy package planted by authorities after he had sent extortion letter.
STATE TO BUILD DIRECT ROAD TO POCKETSECTION Route Expected to Send Traffic Through Bloomington. Times Special BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Dec. 25. Construction of anew state highway betw'een Bums City and Little Cincinnati, a distance of 15 miles, providing a direct route to Indianapolis from Indiana’s “pocket section.” is to start at once, according to H. W. Timolat, chairman of the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce good roads committee. Contracts for the improvement, expected to cost approximately $350,000, have been awarded by the State Highway Commission. The project, w’hen completed, will link improved highways from Rockport to Indianapolis and is expected to divert a part of the traffic now using a roundabout itinerary through Vincennes and Terre Haute. Chamber of Commerce officials who have striven for 10 years to obtain the new route believe the city’s trade influence will be extended considerably. SAYS HER HUSBAND WAS HURT BY AUTO Mrs. Ralph Ellis Denies He Was Injured in Fight. Mrs. Ralph Ellis, 126 E. Vermontst, states that a report printed in The Times Monday that her husband was sent to City Hospital following a fight was incorrect. She says he was struck by an automobile. A police record states that two officers were sent to 128 E. Ver-mont-st on a report that a man was lying in a hallway. Police found no one, but shortly after reported Mr. Ellis was found walking at Delaware and Vermont-sts with a badly lacerated left eye and lips. He said, according to the officers, that he had been injured in a fight. Grief Termed Suicide Cause Grief over the death last March of her husband is said to have prompted the suicide of Mrs. Lottie Koker, 40, Negro, 437 W. 17th-st, at her home today. A belt knotted around her throat brought death.
