Dec. 23.—Former Gov. Gifford Pinchot of Pennsylvania charged in a letter today to President Roosevelt that Federal work-relief in Pennsylvania "has been sold into political bondage. - ’ He charged Republicans are denied work-relief unless they disavow their party and register as Democrats. Before the Works Progress Administration took it over, workrelief in Pennsylvania was clean, Pinchot said. THIEVES LOOT TAVERN: COOK OWN BREAKFAST Ham and Eggs, Cigars and Cigarets Stolen on West Side, Ham and eggs were on the menu of burglars who early today entered, a tavern at 3219 W. Washington-st. operated by J. P Parker. After ransacking the place, taking three boxes of cigars and three cartons of cigarets, they cooked breakfast. Uolice were called by Meredith Ballard, an employe, who discovered the burglary when he opened the tavern this morning. Shoots Self in Head Joe Fitzenberger. 41. of 405 Lin-coln-st, la in critical condition at City Hospital after shooting himself in the right temple today. Domestic difficulties are believed responsible lor the act.

Harold L. Ross (above), director of publicity for Indianapolis Athletic Club, is to talk on club publicity at the national convention of Town and Country Club Managers in New York City next month. Mr. Ross, whose club won first honorable mention last year in a publicity contest sponsored by the association, is to have charge of convention publicity to be held at the Waldorf-Astoria Jan. 13 to 16.

COUNTY ORDERS 1936 SUPPLIES Contracts for Printing and Road Materials Awarded. Marion County commissioners today awarded contracts for part of supplies to be used during 1936, including road materials and printing. Printing contract was awarded William B. Burford Printing Cos. Contracts for heat and light, gas and water for county buildings were given, respectively, to the Indianapolis Power and Light Cos., the Citizens Gas and Coke Utility and the Indianapolis Water Cos. No awards were made for road tar. because of an error in advertising. The Indiana Asphalt Paving Cos. is to.supply asphalt road materials. All gravel bidders received awards. Crushed stone is to be supplied by the Indiana Reformatory and the Ohio and Indiana Crushed Stone Cos. Contracts for metal were given the Truscon Steel Cos. and W. Q. O'Neal. Milk and cream for Sunnyside Sanitarium is to be supplied by the Capitol Milk Cos. WILLIAM LATTA DEAD; 50 YEARS AT PURDUE Veteran Educator Was Also WellKnown as Farm Leader. Times Special WEST LAFAYETTE. Ind.. Dec. 23. Funeral services will be held tomorrow for William Carroll Latta, veteran Purdue University agriculture professor and Indiana farm leader for nearly 50 years. Mr. Latta, who was 85, died at his home here yesterday. Credited with organizing the Purdue Agricultural Experiment Station. Mr. Latta was considered the creator of present day research programs in farm problems. He was a native of Logansport and after graduation from Michigan State College became affiliated with Purdue in 1882. He is survived by the widow; a son, Robert Latta, South Bend; three daughters, Mrs. Pauline Renntsma and Misses Bertha and Mary Latta; two sisters. Mrs. Frank Lagourgue, Anaheim, Cal., and Mrs. S. J. Evinger, Phoenix, Ariz. ILLNESS IS FATAL TO INDIANA ASTRONOMER Irvin Stanley Won Fame for His South Seas Expeditions. Times Special WESTFIELD, Ind., Dec. 23. Funeral arrangements were completed today for Irvin Stanley, astronomer and retired educator who died here yesterday after a long illness. Leader of three expeditions to distant points in the South Seas, Mr. Stanley, 87. gained international prominence during the nineties. His photographic and other contributions in astronomy led to a professorship at the University of Illinois. A native Hoosier. he also taught school here in early years. Surviving are the widow. Ruth; a daughter. Mrs. Robert Haskett; a sister, Mrs. Etta Davis. San Antonia. Tex., and a brother. Arthur Stanley. NEGRO SCHOOL TO OPEN Crawfordsville Classes to Reopen for Second Semester. lip Times Special CRAWFORDSVILLE. md.. Dec. 23—Reopening of the Lincoln grade school, for Negro pupils, has been ordered by the Crawfordsville School Board. The building, closed because of financial difficulties in 1933. is to be renovated by Jan. 27. start of the second semester. Two teachers have been employed to conduct classwork for all local Negro pupils between the first and sixth grades, according to Superintendent M. C. Darnell.
