RELIGIOUS QUESTION BOX Readers of this journal are invited lo send in questions regarding the Trotestant. Catholic and Jewish faiths. Questions will be answered as promptly as possible. They should be addressed to this newpaper or to The National Conference of Jews and Christians, 289 Fourth-av, New York City. Name and address must accompany questions so that a personal reply may be sent if necessary.

Q —Do the Jews expect to build a new Temple in Jerusalem? A—No. The Temple was the shrine for the animal sacrifice detailed in Leviticus. When the Temple was destroyed by the Romans, the rabbis of the times ruled that henceforth prayer would take the place of animal sacrifices. This meant that the synagogue replaced the Temple. Alike for technical, practical and sentimental reasons, the restoration of animal sacrifices is given no consideration, and therefore there is no expectation among Jews of rebuilding the Temple. Nor are they looking for the coming of the Messiah as a result of the Zionist rebuilding of Palestine. Traditionally Jews believe that the Messiah will come "at the end of days,” though there is no formal, definite and unitary Jewish concept of when and how the Messiah will come. Q—ln view of disapproval of secret orders by the Lutheran communion. can one belong to the Order of Eastern Star and take communion in the Lutheran Church? A—ln the Missouri Synod. Lutherans would not be permitted to become members of such an order and come to communion, but in the United Lutheran Church and some other bodies this has not been a subject of discipline. Q—What is the meaning of the Day of the Lord, or of Jehovah, to which reference is made in the Old Testament? A—The Day of the Lord, or of Jehovah, to the mind of the people in general in Old Testament times was the day when Jehovah, their God. would intervene to save them from their oppressors and all their troubles. Tht 1 Hebrew prophets emphasized the moral

significance of the day, and declared that it would be also a day of judgment for Israel's sins, but behind the judgment there always shines the promise of a day of salvation. Q —For what was the valley of Hinnom to which your answer to the question of the spiritual significance of hell refers, used in biblical times? A—The valley of Hinnom is often mentioned in the Old Testament, principally with reference to the high places of Tophet and Baal, where children were passed through the fire to Molech. There were perpetual fires kept up in this valley for consuming dead bodies of criminals and carcases of animals and the refuse of the city. Q —Why do Catholics sprinkle themselves with holy water? A—Catholics use holy water symbolically, to drive away evil spirits, and to call to mind the purity of heart with which they should come into the presence of Christ. In blessing it the priest adds some salt to symbolize incorruption and immortality. Catholics do not believe that the use of holy water has any virtue in itself; they believe its efficiency depends entirely upon the devotion of those v.ho use it. and upon God's acceptance of the prayer of the Church. Q —What will be the actual membership of the proposed united Methodist Church? A—The membership of the proposed Methodist Church is 7.213.337 in the United States only, and over 8.000.000 throughout the world. There is also a Sunday school enrollment of 6.437.000. The three churches now proposing union represent over one-half the communicant Methodist membership of the world and a Methodist constituency of over 30,000,000.
