College Cage Fracas Packs N. Y. Garden Basketball Goes ‘Big Time’ as 17,462 See Violets Trim Bears. By Unitrd Pn *i NEW YORK, Dec. 19.—Basketball definitely has gone big-time in the East. The promise of last year, when intersectional collegiate games drew increasingly large crowds at every one of a series of New York City games, was borne out last night by a turnout of 17,462 to see New York University's five meet the Golden Bears of Southern California. It was important to the fans that the Violets won, 41 to 26, but it was more interesting that a basketball game in early season could fill Madison Square Garden. Promoter Ned Irish said it was the largest basketball crowd on record. Nine more intersectional games will play in the Garden this winter. Coach Howard Cann’s local quintet, recognized as the mythical 1934 Eastern Conference champion, played a superior floor game to defeat, the West Coast squad. The veteran Violets led, 17-9, at the half, partly because of the Bears’ weariness ;rom their long journey. Nibs Prices squad began Its 3000-mile trek from Berkeley on Saturday and arrived here yesterday. The victory lengthened N. Y. U.’s string of conquests to 35 in 36 games in the past two seasons. Butler University and Purdue are slated to play the New York University Violets in Madison Square Garden later this season.

Irish Falter as Franklin Stages Last Minute Rally Locals Lead Until Late in Game, Lose Out in Overtime, 29-27, After Hougland Gets Hot for Visitors.
BY TOM OCHILTREE It's nice the Manuals finally won a gt’ine. Because if they hadn't, there wouldn't have been T6om enough back of the old "eight ball” today for the Cathedrals and them, too. As it is, the Cathedrals feel a little cramped and uncomfortable. The Redskin netters broke their hex yesterday afternoon when they thumped St. Paul, 18*to 12, at the South Side gym, but that isn’t the whole story. Evidently the Fates, those fickle Greek dames, then decided to frown.on Irish basketball hopes. Playing very handily, the Cathedrals had their game with the Franklins won and all but stowed in the old valise, until the last 30 seconds. Then a mighty atom named Herman Hougland outran every one in sight, sank the tying baskets and led his mates to a 29-to-27 victory in the overtime. This made the Cathedrals very sad, and Joseph Dienhart, their coach, didn’t exactly look like he was posing for a tooth paste advertisement. The Irish started fast, when Bob Connor, their star, feinted two guards out of position and punched in a short basket. Then Bernie Broderick looped in two long shots and the Franklin team called time ou\ William Randolph and Floyd Weatherford of Franklin came back then and matched shots with Connor and Broderick. The quarter score was 11 to 6, Cathedral, and at intermission the Irish were ahead, 15 to 12. It was in the second half that Hougland found the range, and from then on the game developed into a personal duel between he and Connor. Hougland and Ran

dolph cut the Irish lead down to one- point, and the locals called time. Then Capt. Connor told all hands to stick close to the men they were guarding and try to keep possession of the ball as ijiuch as possible. ' His advice seemed to take for a while, since the fleet Irish guards kept the Cubs moving so fast they couldn't get set for shots. As is usually the case, it is almost impossible to play a desperate defensive game and not foul somebody. Sure enough, Hougland got a couple of charity shots and missed them both. There were bleats of approbation from the Irish stands, but they came too soon. Hougland was fouled again, and this time he dropped a free throw in to tie the count at 23 to 23. Victor Lanahan, in the last two minutes, sank a shot to give the Cathedrals a two-point lead, but Hougland dropped in two more free throws and he and Connor matched circus shots from the floor just as time was called. In the overtime, an Irish guard left Zion McGlocklin open under the basket, and Hougland quick-passed to that lad, who easily dropped in the winning points. The statistics: Franklin <29). Leaders Satisfied With Gridiron Code By United Prrt NEW YORK. Dec. 19—Reports from members of the National Football Rules Committee indicate little or no sentiment for any important gridiron rule changes. Chairman Walter Okeson said today. “If! their reports, none of the committee members suggested important changes,” Okeson said over the telephone from Bethlehem. Pa., where he is master of Lenig'n University. Because of the general satisfaction with present rules reflected in these reports, Okeson was inclined to doubt that the committee will make any momentous revision when it has its' annual meeting some time in February in California.
