LIFER BEGINS FIGHT TO GAIN HIS FREEDOM Slayer Demands Jurist Be Ordered to Provide Him Counsel. Clyde H. Jones, serving a life sentence at the state prison in connection with the slaying of a Frankfort policeman, has filed action with the State Supreme Court, which he hopes will lead to his freedom. Jones was convicted in Boone Circuit Court Feb. 1, 1930, on a charge of slaying Amos Hamilton at Frankfort in December, 1929. His action was a petition for a writ of mandate against Judge John W. Hornaday of Boone Circuit Court to force the latter to provide a pauper attorney to represent him in coram nobis proceedings. Jones alleged in his petition, written in long-hand, that newly discovered evidence based on alleged “unscrupulous and fraudulent acts of Frankfort city officials” during the trial were sufficient to warrant anew trial. He also asked that Judge Hornaday be mandated to provide a transcript of the evidence.

'Jiyl'Y little Curtiss Hawk has acquired a few new little tricks that makes me doubly proud of this powerful little ship. The plane is now equipped with a bomb rack, located halfway out from the fuselage on the bottom of the lower wing. This rack carries six practice bombs, each loaded with a special powder charge that explodes when the bomb hits the earth, giving a nice big flash and a great puff of smoke. We drop these bombs by giving an exhibition of what is called divebombing. Starting at about 3500 feet, the Hawk goes straight over on her nose, pointed directly at the target below. And with the fuselage straight up and down, the Hawk rushed down toward the earth and when within about 1000 feet of the ground, I remove my left hand from the throttle and grasp the bomb handle close to the left side of the seat. At about 500 feet I pull this handle, meantime guiding the ship with rudder and control stick directly at the target. A quick pull on the handle and the bomb is freed. And then firmly but slowly pulling the control stick back, the Hawk is leveled out and climbed up to 3000 feet again. During the climb I have a chance to look back over the tail, and from the cloud of smoke that hangs over the spot where the bomb struck, I get a true indication of
whether I have hit or missed the target and how much I must allow for the wind on the next dive. Mast dive-bombing is done at a diving angle of about 45 degrees. I'd like you to se it where the ship is diving straight toward the ground. Perhaps you will have a chance to see the Hawk doing its dive-bombing next summer if I visit your city. We re planning a lot of air shows for the Junior Aviator cities and maybe your city is on the list for one of them. The Hawk is fixed up with several other little tricks which I'll describe for you later. Oh, and I might tell you now that I'm planning on getting anew motor for it —one with more power and go-fast. The one I have my eye on is an 850-horse power Cyclone. QUESTION: How many horse power is the engine in Benny Howard's “Mister Mulligan”? The power plant is a 500-horse power Pratt & Whitney Wasp. LICENSE BRANCH OPENS Additional Office Is Located At 501 Virginia-av. An additional auto license branch has been opened at 501 Virginia-av., Walter Boetcher city controller, has announced. The branch in the controller’s office on the first floor of the City Hall has been moved to a room directly across Alabama-st.
