MILK USED IN DIET TO KEEP WEIGHT DOWN Booklet Suggests Menus for 12-Day War on Excess Pounds. They call It "The Milky Way”—a blue-jacketed, star-spangled, free booklet that would fit neatly in a woman's bag, to be used as a handy reference on what food she should order for a 12-day reducing diet. This ought to be a safe and sane schedule for achieving slim perfection of figure, for it is published by the Bureau of Milk Publicity, New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. "It is the unscientific diet that brings physical discomfort. While it melts away pounds, it is apt to cause the individual to become tired and haggardly or dangerously ill. The sicentific diet brings vitality and health with slimness,” the booklet states. The leading streamlining food is, of course, milk, which leads a list that includes tomatoes, oranges, bananas, apples and leafy vegetables. "Improper eating causes overweight, because excess energy-giving foods are transformed into fat. The scientific way to reduce is to maintain the chemical balance so that the blood gets its neecssary iron, the cells their phosphorus, skin and teeth and bones their calcium, muscles their protein," is another bit of advice. This is followed by a calory guide on the dotted lines opposite menu items. These are some of the menus: Breakfast Orange juice, one soft-boiled egg, one slice bread or toast, small pat of butter, coffee, one teaspoon sugar; two tablespoons milk, one glass milk. Lunch Tomato and lettuce salad, French dressing, one glass milk. Dinner Consomme, broiled ham. one-half baked sweet potato, medium serving I of cauliflower, hearts of lettuce with I French dressing, one slice fresh I pineapple, glass of milk. The booklet is brightened with photographs of such pretty moving picture stars as Heather Angel and Margot Grahame and tips on how the Hollywood girls keep healthy and slim. | Stones in I | STAMPS | I Br I 5 Kie.r; | j J^Bi^indKing /Luxemburg The Grand Duchy of Luxemburg today is scarcely 1000 miles in area, and retains its sovereignty only by the grace of the rest of Europe. Yet in the fourteenth century, the power of Luxemburg spread over Bohemia, Silesia, the Tyrol and a large part of Italy, and its influence was felt even in a great part of what is now Germany. All through the ambitious activities of its king, John the Blind. King John, born in 1296. displayed the ruthless, driving disposition of his father, Henry VII. when at the age of 14. he was offered the throne of Bohemia. At the age of 50 he became blind. But blindness did not, deter him. The same year in which he was stricken, he went to France to help Philip IV attack the English.
