PURDUE STEAM STUDY TO BRING BETTER ENGINES Turbines, Power Generating Equipment Expected to Be Improved. Time (Special NEW YORK. Dec. s—Working with steam heated to 1000 degrees, Purdue University staff members reported at the annual meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers new fact?., which are expected to mean ..mprovement of turbines and steam power generating equipment. Submitted by G. A. Hawkins, the report covers a project conducted in collaboration with Dean A. A. Potter and Prof. H. L. Solberg. Vicosity of water and superheated steam, Mr. Hawkins told the society, is the resistance of the fluid to flow, and has been a problem confronting designers of steam-pro-ducing and power equipment. Not Much Known Before Until the investigation was undertaken at Purdue, he said, vicosities of water were known for temperatures only up to 320 degrees, and of super-heated steam for pressures only as high as 135 pounds per square inch. In the tests at Lafayette, he explained, viscosities of water were determined for as high as 706 degrees, after which the element loses liquid form, and for steam at pressures as high as 3500 pounds per square inch. Steam at high pressures, Mr. Hawkins stated, increases in temperature and the high point reached, 1000 degrees, turned the pipes red Viscosities of the superheated steam, he revealed, were determined by tirqing the speed at which a steel body fell through an accurately bored stainless steel tube, containing steam at varied pressures and temperatures. Because it was impossible to observe the movement of the body, its fall was measured by using a three-stage radio amplifier in an electrical circuit, which traced the movement on a chart driven by an electric clock. TOWN DADS FACE CRISIS Police Force of Two Resigns; New Year’s Resolution in Order. Times Special KNIGHTSTOWN, Ind., Dec. 5. It may be early, but the Town Board here is pondering a New Year’s resolution. At their last meeting members accepted the resignations of Day Marshal Charles Clark and Night Marshal Andrew Judd. Since both officers are quitting Dec. 31, the board must either “resolve” successors or leave the town with no police protection for 1936.
