NOVEMBER PAY ROLLS REACH HIGHEST FIGURE SINCE 19321 STATE AUTO INDUSTRY GAINS Transportation Equipment Work Up 25.9 Per Cent; Non-Manufacturing 1 Group Shows Loss; Mining Employment Up 7.9. November pay rolls of Indiana factories reached the highest point since December, 1932, and employment was up to the September, 1935, level, according to a preliminary report by Martin F. Carpenter, director of the Indiana State Employment Service, affiliated with the United States Employment Service.
Report is based cn a survey of 697 firms employing 123,131 persons, 58 per cent of all manufacturing employes in the state. Employment increased 2.3 per cent and pay rolls 3 per cent. The report attaches much significance to these figures as data for the nation as a whole, covering the past 16 years, shows decrea: under both headings in 13 of the years. The average v/as 1.7 per cent less emplovment, and 2.8 per cent pay roll decrease. Auto Employment Responsible Increases during November, the report states “were due entirely to substantial gains in employment and pay rolls in the automobile and automobile part manufacturing plants in the state. Without the unusual activities in the automobile business due to the early introduction of new' models, the tabulations for No - r mher would show a decrease In line ith seasonal expectations.” Os 14 manufacturing groups surveyed. nine showed increased emnlovment last month. Leading the nine was the transportation equipment group with a work gain of 25.9 per cent and a pay roll increase of 35.4 per cent. Other classifications gaining were iron and steel, machinery. railroad repair shops, nonferrous metals, clay, stone and glass, textile and rubber. The five industries with decreases were lumber, leather, foods, tobacco, paper and printing, and chemicals. Ten of 22 Indiana cities covered in the survey showed employment, and pay roll gains. Eleven showed a loss and one. Indianapolis, was unchanged. South Bend Area Largest Cities with gains were Anderson, Connersville, East Chicago, Lafayette, LaPorte, Michigan City, Muncle, Richmond. South Bend, Mishawaka and Terre Haute. South Bend and Mishawaka had the largest employment rise, 19.7 per cent; LaPorto. 12.7 per cent, was second, and Muncie, 11.5, third. For the manufacturing group, the employment Increase for November was 13 per cent over the same month last year, and pay rolls, 33.2 per cent. Tn the non-manufacturing industries. nine groups were surveyed, six showing employment decreases, two increases and ond unchanged. Employment loss was .7 per cent and pay roll decrease, 1.6 per cent. Average employment curtailment by 459 retail establishments was .9 per cent. Employment conditions of 160 wholesale firms were unchanged. Employment in Indiana coal mines increased 7.9 per cent, while there was a loss of 40.6 per cent in quarrying and non-metallic mining. Hotels, laundries, dyeing and cleaning establishments reported employment. losses, while 11 banks reported a 1.2 per cent gain. A summary of the report covering 1498 firms, manufacturing and nonmanufacturing, with a total of 152.657 employes, shows an employment gain of 1.7 per cent and pay roll increase of 2.1.
