Solution to Previous Contract Problem BY W. F.. M KENNEY Secretary American Bridge League is not unusual to find a declarer executing an end play to force an opponent to lead into a tenaos position, or up to a king. But to complete an elimination and throw in play, to force an opponent to lead up to a ten-spot is rather unusual.

It was just such a play that gave Ellis Samuel, Detroit, top score on today’s hand. East's opening lead was the king of clubs. When it held, a small diamond was played. Naturally, declarer’s best play is to finesse dummy's jack, but West covered with the queen, declarer winning the trick with the king. Three rounds of trump were taken, the third trump trick being won in dummy with the jack. Now a small spade was played from dummy. West split his honors and played the jack, declarer winning the trick with the king. Then a small diamond was led, winning in dummy with the ace. Another diamond was ruffed. This stripped the West hand of diamonds. The ten of spades was led and allowed to be won by West with the queen. Now West was helpless. He had to lead away from his 9-2 of spades into dummy’s A-8 or play a club, which declarer would allow to ride up to his ten-spot. j In this manner declarer lost only * two club tricks, which, of course, held the entire loss to three tricks, permitting him to make his contract. PERFUME CABINET IS NEWEST WRINKLE The newest wrinkle in marketing cosmetics is a perfume cabinet, which gives the perfume shopper a chance to smell any scene unadulterated by other odors. The shopper enters the cabinet and presses one of a series of buttons which designate the perfume to be tested. The stale air is sucked out of the cabinet, fresh air rushes in for about 10 seconds and then perfumed air pours in. After sniffing to her heart's content, she pushes another button and the cabinet repeats the procedure—this time letting her smell something different.

Manners and Morals BY JANE JORDAN
If you're facing an important decision write to Jane Jordan for more light on your problem! Dear Jane Jordan —I am a young woman of 20. Please take my problem seriously, as I am going to act upon your advice. Since childhood I have been the girl friend of a decent, upright boy. He is two years my senior. I know that I have been
unfair to him many times but he always has forgiven me. He never has pretended to be in love with any one else but me, but I have gone with other boys whom I thought I loved. I always get tired of them. A year ago I went with a boy for three months. Now he

has come back to town and I don’t know whether I’ve gotten over my crush for him or not. I have promised to marry my childhood sweetheart. I know I really love him but should I maiVy him? I still think of the other boy quite often. I can not explain it but I don't want to marry until I am sure of my stability. There is no need to tell me to go with this other boy and find out if I really love him because my steady not give me another chance: and I don’t blame him for that attitude, for his is a sincere love and he has given me too many chances nmr PUZZLED. Answer—i do not think it is fair to the young man for you to marry him as long as other boyr. attract you more than he does. You say you’ve always gone back to your old standby, but weren't your returns influenced by the fact that no one more exciting was available at the moment? If you choose your boy friend because he is more interesting to you than his rivals you have a good basis for companionship, but if you choose him simply because you prefer him to loneliness, neither of you is secure when someone you like better appears. I do not say you should not marry him at all, for I do not know. It may be that you are looking for something in love that you are not going to get under any circumstances. Continuous thrills, for example, are not indigenous to marriage. You can’t live on the peaks forever. Your nervous system won’t stand it and neither will your husband's. You may have a thirst for more admiration than any man can give you. Anew beau, carried away by his first enthusiasm, is a tremendous boost to a girl's ego. The beginning stages of courtship are a continuous process of falsification in which each puts his best foot forward to please the other and represses that part of his personality which is displeasing to the other. Such a situation has no basis in reality and can not last long. Sooner or later

the repressed part of the personality will out. If the partners are able to adjust themselves to each other amiably from this point on they belong together. Perhaps this is what has happened to you and your boy friend. You know the worst about each other and still you stick together. Nevertheless you crave something else. Your job is to find out whether what you crave is obtainable or not. If it is, go after it. If it isn’t, reconcile yourself to the fact that the moon is not gained by crying for it. I do think this point should be settled in your own mind before you marry anybody.
Sleeves Varied 474 O L
BY ELLEN WORTH It’s such a pretty little dress, and just as simple as can be. The puffed sleeves are so cute that show off the chubby arms. Or it may have the new long shirt sleeves, gathered into cuff bands. And there’s plenty of fulness in the skirt that falls softly from the brief yoke, to allow lots of leg space for her to romp about. A checked cotton broadcloth in maize and brown made this dross. Plain broadcloth to match the maize background of the cotton, made the collar and sleeve bands. Os course, wool challis prints, wool crepe, velveteen or wool jersey, could also be used as well as cottons for this easily made dress. Style No. 474 is designed for sizes 2. 4 and 6 years. Size 4 requires Diyard of 35-inch contrasting and % yards of 35-inch contrasting and 3 i yard of 3 * -inch ribbon for collar and short sleeve bows. THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES
Following the movie stars around the clock, as they dress for sports, afternoon and evening engagements, reveals a varied array of outfits. Valerie Hobson, Universal player, upper left, appears in a street costume with draped cape forming a part of a gay plaid jacket of rabbit’s wool. It is of a rough weave in canebrake green to match the skirt and Robin Hood hat with tinted feather. The bag matches the outfit. The satin hostess gown in pastel color modeled by Rosalind Russell, upper center, is fashioned with high cowl neckline forming a gracefully draped shoulderline. The sleeves from the elbows are tight fitting and deeply fringed, echoing the deep fringe trimming down the side. An unusual note in the afternoon blouse worn by Wendy Barrie, upper right, in the picture "A Feather in Her Hat,” which opens tomorrow at Loew’s Palace, is the collar treatment. The blouse of ribbed silk is on fitted lines with bell sleeves and has a short cape with a double ruff collar. West Point gray and persimmon are combined into the evening dnss worn by Sally Eilers, Universal star, lower. The picture dinner gown borders on the Renaissance with a front panel permitting a skirt flare. The corded bodice has persimmon flounces, stiffened and iippled down to the V-back. The persimmon color is repeated in the narrow tie at the waist.

All of Us Must Have Windows to Reveal ‘The World Outside’
BY OLIVE ROBERTS BARTON ‘‘What do you think of the new idea in school buildings?” I was asked. “Schools with no windows, perfect ventilating systems of washed air and indirect lighting that throws an even glow equally into every part of the room.” My answer w r as quick and decisive. “I’d die,” I replied quickly. “Why? We think it’s a grand idea.” “All but the windows,” said I. “I need windows; we all need windows. Everybody needs to feel there's a world outside.” And I mean it. The very first instinct a baby shows is this protest against physical, constriction. Hold him tight and he will scream. As we grow older, we shake this off somewhat, but the real fear never leaves us. We have to have the feeling of physical freedom, of contact with our fellow men, the chance to look at the sky or only the building next door if we want to.

I always write near a window. I can not write even at a secretary with a top. Somehow I feel that cabinet in front of me shuts out vision. I can not work facing a wall if the wall is too close. On the coldest days when I can feel the air fairly congealing on the glass, I seek the window. No warm secluded corners for me! I can think more clearly if I feel the world outside is near. It isn’t a feeling of lonelines—l like loneliness; it is a deeper instinct so insistent I do not try to define it. I’ll admit that not all people are this way, but I know many, and surely a great percentage of children feel it,- too. Oh, yes, perhaps we could “condition” children to it. Catch them young enough and you can do anything, I guess. The cave child, for that matter, may never have seen daylight until he could handle his own club.

There is, for instance, a variety of mascaras and eyeshadows in bright colors. One manufacturer is stressing a green wax for lashes and another is putting out reddish purple. vivid blue and East Indian orange in cake form. There are new lipsticks and rouge in yellowish brown East Indian shades, too. These certainly don't match your natural skin colors but, when worn with dark, warm winter suits and dresses, they are pretty and soft looking. If you fancy green mascara, don't put on East Indian orange rouge and lipstick. Don’t wear vivid purple eyeshadow, green mascara with powder that changes the natural glow of your skin. Just for varietv any one of those is a nice idea, but more than one probably will make you look grotesque rather than interesting. There are many new nail polish colors right now. Gold and silver are seen on some of the smartest hands at formal dances and parties. You also car. get your favorite shade done up with a mother-of-pearl finish that shines and glistens under artificial light.
