GRANDDAD RIGHT ARGOT WINTER, EXPERTTHINKS Weather Trend Is Toward Warmer and Drier Seasons, He Says. BY HILLIER KRIEGHBAUM Lnited Pres* Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Nov. 15.—Grandfather is right when he tells the youngsters that winters aren't anything like they were when he .was young. The government will back up his story. Joseph B. Kincer, chief of the Weather Bureau's Climate Division, said today that the trend of United States’ weather had been warmer and drier for the past 25 years. Even the first ten months of this year were in keeping with the trend. He presented charts showing the five-year averages now were four inches deficient in rainfall each year and four degrees warmer than normal. Last year was even more exceptional, with precipitation 12 inches below normal for the entire country, and the temperature almost eight degrees warmer. The first ten months of 1935 followed the warmer and drier trend,

but showed a recession from last j year's extremes. Mr. Kincer said it was possible (although he admitted it was just guess work to speculate about what the weather will do in the next few months', that climate conditions are swinging toward colder and wetter. All the country except the West Coastal regions, New England and New York State had an excess temperature of at least 1 degree each day. That means that if the mercury fell belcw the average for one day, it was 2 degrees higher some other day to maintain the balance. Three sections of the countrydaily averages of 2 degrees warmer than normal. They were most of North Dakota, Western Virginia, Western North Carolina, Nebraska! Oklahoma, Northern Texas and Western Missouri. Practically all of the* Middle West, the old South, Eastern California, Nevada and Arizona were above normal in rain or snowfall for the first nine months of this year, Kincer said. The Pacific Northwest, the Rocky Mountain area, New England and Middle Atlantic States were somewhat below normal. “It appears from a study of weather records that granddad was not so far wrong as we have been wont to believe in his statements about the exit of the old-fashioned tvinter of his boyhood days,” Mr. Kincer said. But some of these winters, he believes, the country will have enough snow and cold weather to match aven that of grandfather's day. He will not predict which winter/however.
