Rides—of Pleasure and of Death; Mark Mason-Dean Trial in Criminal Court
BY ARCH STEINEL Timm Starr Writer Justice rides in Criminal Court. A Boston terrier taking a pleasure ride nightly with his master . . . the ride of the master, a police sergeant, from which he didn't return . . . alleged bandits taking frightened taxi-man for a ride . . . attorneys for state and defense “riding" witnesses . . . And frazzled justice limping along trying to drive into the minds of a bespectacled jury <lO wear glasses) that Sergt. Lester Jones was killed in a holdup Feb. 6. 1033, and that for two years and nine months nothing has come of it. Thoughts That Pass All these thoughts ride through the minds of those who hear testimony in Criminal Court at the trial of Willie Mason and Edward (Foggy) Dean. There are two missing exhibits —one an inanimate cap of a taxi driver, the other a very-much-ahve terrier, Buddy, the sergeant’s dog. Police can't find the cap. The prosecutor's office hunted for it—but gave up. It was usea as evidence at the other trials of Dean and Mason. The terrier can be found easily. He is at home—sl7 N. Riiey-av—-where Mrs. Goldie Jones, the sergeant’s widow,' hurries after each adjournment. Buddy Remembers She watches the court by-play, knows the testimony by heart. “Justice is all I want,” she says as she shakes her head wearily. “People forget so easily. Some hardly remember Lester and what happened. But." she added, “Buddy hasn’t forgotten.” Buddy and her husband followed a daily ritual. Morning and evening, coming home, or going to work, he took the terrier for an automobile ride. Disconsolate Dog Hearing clashing gears or a car’s sudden stop in front of the Jones’ home, Buddy and his only son, Tony, one-year-old, leap atop a sofa to look out the window. Their ears snap to attention. They look long. “Who’s coming?” Mrs. Jones asks Buddy. Tail down. Buddy ambles off the sofa disconsolately, with curious Tony following. His. tail wags slowly in disappointment. “No! No ride, Buddy,” says the sergeant’s widow. In the courtroom, Judge Remy

WEEKLY BUSINESS REVIEW
NEW INDUSTRY JOINS GROUP IN FACTORY AREA Electric Furnace Concern Developing Lighter for Smoking. According to Emerson W. Chaille, president of the management concern, the Indianapolis Industrial Center, manufacturing and distributing area at 19th-st and Martin-dale-av, is now 95 per cent occupied. With this high rate of occupancy attained since the center has been in the hands of the real estate firm of Emerson W. Chaille & Cos., there still remain several, thousand square feet of rentable space in modern buildings suitable for light manufacturing and distributing activities, or storage and warehousing. The latest tenant to rent space in the center is the Cooley Electric Furnace Cos., manufacturer of electrical heating equipment, which recently moved into building No. 19. This company is a licensee of the Dougherty Research Cos., New York, under patents covering anew and unique type of electrical heating element. For some time the company has been manufacturing electric furnaces suitable for chemical and metallurgical work, but the element now also is being applied to a wider variety of uses due to its unique characteristics. Anew development Just completed by the Cooley company is the Glo-Tip electric table lighter designed primarily for the lighting of pipes, but suitable for the lighting of all smoking items. This is the first successful electric lighter of the “pass-around” type for use on 110-volt lighting circuits. Production has been started on the lighter, which is developing considerable popularity, other electric heating devices are in process of development. Summer Room All Winter It s important to use color to combat the darkness of winter days. In the sun room, for instance, carefully selected tints will make the most of every ray of sunshine that enters and give the impression that it’s a bright day when it’s really gray and drizzling outside. Pale yellow walls and woodwork yellowmange draperies, blue and green tones on painted furniture, brightly enameled crocks for the growing plants, will give the effect of an indoor garden where the sun is shining. Insures Stronger Film Tire term “sealer,” used in connection with painting, refers to a coating formulated to fill the pores of unduly absorbent surfaces, in preparation for painting. By preventing the absorption of oil from the paint they not only reduce the number of coats required, but insure a more uniform appearing and stronger film. Color Preference Color is medium which reflects the individuality and preferences of the home owner. The importance of rugged durability in outside paint gives way, in interiors, to the consideration of such hues and tints as will give the greatest pleasure to those who see them daily.

COLD WEATHER WARNING GIVEN TO MOTORISTS Don Herr Calls Attention to Changes Autos Require Now. In the November issue of the Service Bulletin, published by the Don Herr garage. Kentucky-av and Maryland-st, appears the following notice: “Despite the warnings and advice of car manufacturers and service institutions who know the certain failures and repair expense of cars that go into winter with summer clothes on.’ approximately . $20,000,000 are paid—after the first freeze—by car owners who thought their cars were O. Precautions should be taken against the ravages of cold weather so as to guard against frozen radiators, broken water pumps, dead batteries and many other cold weather troubles. It is especially important that the summer lubricant be changed, as it is positively dangerous to run the car in colder weather with the lubricant that lias been in the transmission and differential all summer.
