DE SOTO OFFERS REFINEMENTS IN ITS TWO LINES Airstream, Airflow Models Boast Increase in Car Performance. Boasting refinements in design nnd appointments and new engine features for increased performance, the 1936 De Soto models consist of two lines of cars—a new Airstream and the Airflow 111. The Airstream is presented in a de luxe and custom edition on 117inch wheelbase. The following body models will be available in
both series: Touring sedan, touring brougham and coupe. The custom line, in addition, will offer a convertible sedan and a convertible coupe. The Airflow' will be manufactured in two body types sedan and coupe. The Airstream, 4 ~ ~

incorpora ting many of the Airflow features, will be priced Just above the lowest price cars. The Airflow will be offered in about the same medium low price field as last year. With the two lines De Soto now embraces the low-medium and low-price fields. In discussing the new- cars, A. R. Jones and C. M. Maley, heads of Jones & Maley, Inc., distributors for this territory, declared that the great success of the Airstream in its first year and the established popularity of the Airflow' made it wise to offer again cars that covered a wide price range. “The sales c' the De Soto Airstream since its introduction have proved to us that

them in addition to satisfactory transportation.” Both Airflow and Airsfream have the following advanced features: — High compression engine with lull length water jackets; synchro silent transmission; hypoid rear axles; anew "gas saver” overdrive; new Amola-steel semi-elliptic tapered leaf springs; self-equalizing hydraulic brakes; ‘‘floating power” engine mounting; anodic pistons; rust-proofed bodies; safety steel body. Safety Emphasized As in the past. De Soto engineers have put emphasis on safety, with safety-steel bodies, hydraulic brakes ! and safety glass. This year’s models add another important feature to this list with “safe vision” lighting. The new lights reduce headlight glare on the highways and provide more penetrating rays for driving in rain and fog. The new De Soto lights have two beams. As in the past, there is an upper beam for clear road driving and a lower beam for meeting other cars. The non-glare feature is incorporated in the lower beam, which deflects not only down but to the right as well. Thus the new control helps to take the blinding glare out of the other driver’s eyes and put it where it really will serve a purpose—along the right edge of the highway. The new Airstream is longer and lower, having a wheelbase of 117 inches. The tape measure show's 196 inches from bumper to bumper. Interiors are longer and wider. Through rearrangement and construction refinements the line from the windshield to the rear window now is four and one-half inches longer than in previous models and

s-sats are wider for increased elbow and shoulder room. Float Over Roads The “floating ride” has been incorporated in both cars. This “ride” is not the result of one feature, but many, engineers claim. They cite as the contributing factors redistributed weight, improved springing, cro.ss steering and a ride stabilizer. Weight redistribution, with anew leaf spring, has given the term “floating ride” anew meaning this year. These springs, made from the recently perfected Amola steel, are thinned out at the ends so that more area of each leaf comes in contact with the adjoining leaves. In the Airflow both the front and rear springs are of this design, while the Airstream models have individual (coil type) springs in front and tapered leaf springs in the rear. Cooling the Engine The engines, which in all De Soto models have unusually high compression ratios to increase power, performance and enonomy, have been made more efficient this year by the addition Os full-length cooling of the cylinder walls. Engineers found that by adding water jackets that extend the full length of the cylinders oil temperatures were materially reduced, thereby cutting down oil consumption. The new engines also provide a new automatic spark control utilizing the vacuum of the intake manifold. This device has eliminated the spark knock which has been an objectionable feature of high compression heretofore. The six-cylinder L-head engine of the Airflow has a standard compression ratio of 6.5 to 1, with 7 to 1 optional. The engine has an aluminum head and develops 100 horsepower at 3400 r. p. m. The Airstream engine has a compression ratio of 6 to 1, with a cast-iron cylinder head. It develops 93 horsepower at 3400 r. p. m. The stroke and bore of the De Soto engine is 3% inches by iV 2 inches, giving a piston displacement of 241.5 cubic inches. The Brakes You Get The hydraulic system on every Buick car is tested under 300 pounds per square inch pressure before it leaves the factory.

CHRYSLER PREDICTS INCREASED ACTIVITY Says Nation Will Make Wholesome Progress. “The natural forces that make this country truly great appear to be reasserting themselves. Business has come back a long way since 1932. And the momentum built up during the last few years seems to be pushing us on toward more normal activity,” Walter P. Chrysler said today. “What is more important perhaps is that people have begun to realize that this country has great recuperative powers and to act accordingly. i have profound faith in the common sense, the ability, the industry and the initiative of the American people, and I believe these qualities in addition to our natural resources will enable us to make wholesome as well as more las* • progress. ‘'i automobile industry this year has given tangible evidence of a trend toward more active buying than we have had in the recent past. For several years the industry has been putting itself in a position to supply the needs of oetter times. “I believe the public’s response to the new automobiles for 1936 will fully justify the industry’s be-

SMALLEST MACHINE REQUIRES MAN-POWER Upholstery Button Sewer Operated by Three Persons. Curiously, the smallest machine in the passenger car plant of Dodge requires the most man-power for its operation. The machine is one assembling upholstery buttons. Two men feed the buttons and the fabric covering, while the third keeps the hoppers filled with the various parts of which the buttons are made. 60-40 Sales Division Analysis of Pontiac sales in 1935 shows that about 40 per cent are eight-cylinder cars and the remainder six and de luxe types.

CHEVROLET DESIGNED OWN BRAKE SYSTEM Provides Adjustment Point for Each Shoe. Chevrolet introduces a new* braking system this year, utilizing the hydraulic principle of actuation in combination with its own design of brake mechanism within the brake drums at all four wheels. The system, says the company's announcement, possesses the advantaged of hydraulic brake actuation plus the benefits that Chevrolet has built into its own type of articulated brake shoes and linkage by which pedal pressure is converted into braking effect. Except for the means of actuating the brake shoes, the new Chevrolet brake system is the same as last year, though improved in mechanical details and increased in braking capacity. Ease of brake adjustment to compensate for wear is one of the features of Chevrolet’s exclusive brake design. There is only one adjusting point for each brake shoe, reached through an opening in the brake flange plate or the brake drum.
FORD ACHIEVES MILLION MARK Prediction Made Year Ago to Newspaper Man Is Realized. Last year Henry Ford promised to build a million cars during 1935. He made good this promise. In fact, he did better than he anticipated. He built 1.000,000 in the first ten months of this year. A year ago Mr. Ford was interviewed by a newspaper man who asked him about his plans. “Next year,” said Ford, “well build a million cars. You may say ‘a million cars or better.’ ” In most of the raw material markets and the financial centers, it was taken as the first solid evidence that American industry was pulling out of the depression. Recently, as Mr. Ford and Edsel Ford looked on, a black Fordor sedan came down the assembly line. It was the one millionth Ford unit made in the United States since Jan. 1. “How about next year?” a newspaper man asked Mr. Ford. “Well,” he said, smiling broadly, “you can just say we’ll make all we can sell and sell all we can make."
