The new 1936 Plymouth* on display at the Automobile Show here are longer, lower and wider, states, H. C. Watson, Indianapolis District Manager fox Chrysler, De Soto and Plymouth. Style changes mark the new’ models in exterior appearance. The long, low contours of the body sweep back from anew radiator grille, distinguished by rows of bright chromium bars on both sides of a center section ol vertical bars finished in the same color as the body. The car has been lowered one inch in over-all height, with the center of gravity closer to the ground. Three business and seven de luxe body types, all on 113-inch wheelbases, make up the ’36 line. Interiors have been redesigned to allow four and one-half inches more passenger space front to rear, and about two inches more elbow and shoulder room. The safety-steel body, reinforced for additional strength, is insulated from the frame with sound-deadening rubber. The frame, "backbone” of the car, has been redesigned. Tests show it to be twice as resistant to twisting forces as previous production frames. As a result of experience with airflow design, Plymouth engineers have perfected a so-called ‘'shockless” steering as an added comfort feature. seat cushions. The front seats of the de luxe two-door sedan models are no longer bucket-type seats, common to such models. They now extend the full width of the car, allowing accommodation for three persons in the front seat. The instrument panel has been simplified by the placing of all instruments within the face of a large, airplane-type speedometer. Arm rests on the new models fit into the sides of the car, adding extra elbow and shoulder room. In the de luxe sedan ash trays have been inserted in the forward ends of the arm rests. Plymouth retains its ventilation system, except that in de luxe four-door sedans the rear quarter windows now swing out to draw air out of the car at the rear. The body is cushioned on rubber for the first time. Composition rubber shims are placed between the

body and frame to insulate the body against road noises. Body rumble is eliminated even on .cobblestone pavements. There are more than 400 rubber parts, fifty pounds of rubber, in the new car. Anew system of headlighting, incorporated in the 1936 model as ‘•safe vision” lighting, is designed to reduce headlight glare and provides more penetrating beams for ' driving through fog and rain. The headlights have two beams, an upper beam for meeting other | cars. ; The non-glare feature is incorporated in the lower beam, which deflects the light not only down but to the right, out of oncoming drivers’ eyes and on the right side of the curb line. Like 1.400.000 Plvmouths before them, the 1936 models have selfequalizing hydraulic brakes. The balanced weight, synchronized spring action ride has been improved materially. The front springs are pivoted at the rear instead of the front. Anew steering side front spring absorbs road irregularities as an additional aid to “shockless” steering. Plymouth bodies, fenders and small sheet metal parts are rustproofed. A newly developed highcolor enamel paint, replacing lacquers previously used, prolongs the life of the exterior finish. One for the Doctor An innovation of the 1935 auto motive season was the introduction by Pontiac, of the "Doctor's Special” —a coupe with special equipment fitting the needs of a professional man.

RETAIL SALES LARGER ON CADILLAC-LA SALLE Greatest October Record Since 1929, Statistics Reveal. Cadillac-La Salle retail sales were larger during October than in any October since 1929, it was reported by J. C. Chick, general sales manager for the Cadillac Motor Car Cos.. “Factory production, shipments to dealers and retail sales all established October records that have not been matched since 1929,” said Mr. Chick. “Retail sales in October were 259 per cent ahead of October, 1934. “Unfilled orders from dealers now are at a level which has necessitated an increase in the CadillacLa Salle production schedule for November, and w'hich will keep the factory operating at capacity well on into next year.” Hydraulics on Nash Super-hydraulic brakes of the Duo-Serve type are standard equipment on the 1936 Nash “400” and the 1936 LaFayette. The hand, or emergency, brake operates on the rear w'heels instead of the drive shaft.

AUTO SHOW IS THIRD BIRTHDAY FOR LAFAYETTE Lowest Priced of New Models Shows Single Piece Body. With the opening of the 1936 automobile show, Lafayette enters its third year as a permanent entry of the Nash Motors Cos., in the lowpriced field, declared E. L. Shaver, head of the E. L. Shaver Cos., La-fayette-Nash distributors for this territory. A host of new features, many of them exclusive, puts the ’36 Lafayette in a stronger position in this field. Anew convertible coupe has been added to the six models previously available, besides a threepassenger business coupe with rear quarter windows and a five-passen-ger rumble seat coupe with rear quarter windows. Prices range from $595 for the business coupe to S7OO for the sixpassenger, four-door sedan with trunk, f. o. b. factory. Bigness is one impression of the car. The unbroken sweep of its streamlined body and hood imparts a feeling of size. Motor Moved Forward Redistribution of weight, another innovation, is a contributing factor to increased riding comfort. In moving the motor forward approximately six inches, Nash engineers have been able to place the passenger compartment more nearly in the center of the car. Both front and rear seat passengers now ride between the axles in the zone of greatest comfort. In the interest of safety Lafayette introduces the first all-steel body with a seamless steel top in the industry. Floor, pillars, side panels and top are all steel, welded together in one piece. A loosely matted layer of soft fibers approximately an inch thick further insulates the top against heat and cold. Hydraulic brakes are now standard equipment. They are permanently equalized and operate with duo-serve action. Oversized, it is interesting to note that their 176 square inches of braking surface is slightly more than is used on a standard make ton and a half truck.

NEW GOODYEAR TUBE AIDS SAFETY DRIVE Blowout Converted Into Slow Leak by Device. NEW YORK. Nov. 9.—With % mounting toll of death and injury on the highways directing thoughts of motorists to safer driving and prevention of accidents, interest in the new Goodyear Lifeguard tube is reaching even higher levels, according to Goodyear officials “No one can ignore the importance today of developing • every practical protection to human life.” declared Paul W. Litchfield, presl dent of Goodyear. “With the increasing speeds and density of modern traffic in mind. I charged Goodyear men some years ago with the duty of meeting this situation squarely so far as tires were concerned. “One of the greatest dangers, though relatively a rare one, is what happens when a tire blows out,” Mr.' Litchfield explained. “Now, after long research and literally hundreds of experiments, an effective solution is offered by Goodyear's Lifeguard tube.”
