PFAFF-HUGHEL CHIEFS GO ON TRIAL MONDAY Investors Lost Million in Security Firm Crash, Nolan Alleges. *, Trial of Walter P PfafT. Myron M and Robert B. Robinson, officials of PfafT A: Hughel. defunct Investment firm, is to open Monday in Federal Court, They will be tried on six counts of a mail fraud indictment returned Oct. 1 by the Federal grand jury. The case is alleged by Val Nolan, United States district attorney, to have been a “million-dollar fraud." An Indianapolis widow lost nearly $800.0C3 by reason of the firm's operations, Mr. Nolan said. More than 50 persons testified before the grand jury. The government case is based on mailing of alleged fraudulent memoranda, dividend notices and receipts to customers. Conviction on all counts carries a maximum prison term of 30 years. The firm, once one of the largest Investment houses in the state with branches in several cities, filed a voluntary bankruptcy petition In Federal Court April 8. At that time debts were listed at $573,712 and assets $575,600. Most of the assets subsequently proved to be virtually worthless, authorities said. ACCOUNTANTS MEET IN CITY TOMORROW Northwestern Cl. Professor to Speak at Luncheon. Several hundred are expected to attend an open luncheon-meeting of the Indiana Association of Certified Public Accountants tomorrow in the Lincoln. Dr. H. A. Finney, Northwestern University accounting professor, Is to speak on “What Good Is a Holding Company.” Dr. James W. Putnam, Butler University president, will introduce the speaker. William P. Cosgrove, State Board of Certified Accountants president; members of the State Board of Accounts, Dean Herman Wells of Indiana University School of Commerce and R E. Cavanaugh, Indiana University extension division director have been invited. J. R. Wharton, South Bend, president, will preside. Jordan Conservatory brass quartet will entertain. j NEW MEMBERS SOUGHT Legion Auxiliary Begins Drive; Radium Fund Aided. Membership drive has been launched by the Twelfth District Council, American Legion Auxiliary, it was announced today. Mrs. John Paul Ragsdale is director. Contribution of $25 was voted lor the City Hospital radium fund at a recent meeting, augmenting a previous contribution of the same amount. Assistance in the Red Cross roll cr’l was pledged.
