350 TEACHERS HEAR STETSON ON ATTENDANCE Superintendent Lashes Old Conception of Truant Officer. .Sw an sons of the untrained truant officer, who was termed as ‘‘extinct as the dodo bird." was sung today at the Tri-State Conference on Pupil Personnel in the Claypool. Dr. Arch O Heck, Ohio State University, told the 350 teachers and attendance officers that schools must not sit bark and be contented vith merely hiring trained psychologists in dealing with pupils. Antiquated truant officers were given a verbal lashing by Paul C. Stetson, school superintendent. "The day is past when any Asthmatic, broken-down police officer whose arches no longer are able to support him is assigned to the public schools as a truant officer," Mr. Stetson said. Warns of federal Relief He warned against the danger that a large amount of Federal relief might rear a generation "altogether too willing and too accustomed to lean for support on the government, "It takes skill to avoid making dole-hunters of this generation of School children,” he declared. Dr. Heck said. "We still have attendance officers who think of their job as that, of mere enforcement.” He described one of the main problems facing the schools as that o f determining the - vast number of children lost to the public schools” and how to prevent that loss. Unemployed Prof r"Tt i R ecognized that is here ho stay and that minions of our unemployed never can be used in production,” ho said. He declared a greater per cent of employment would be possible if the piofifs of production were "distnbuterl more equitably.” The sessions continue through tonight and tomorrow with election of officers and the place of the next conference to be determined tomorrow.
