Works Progress Administration worker- have tn gun collecting information that is to be compiled Into the Indiana division of the American Guide, a national WPA project, which will be a sort of Baedeker of America. Research workers, writers and students of Indiana history are gathering and compiling the information. When completed, the American Guide will be published in five, volumes and will contain a comprehensive picture of the scenic, recreational. historical, cultural, economic and commercial resources of the country. Compendium of Folklore The books will be encyclopedia of American folklore, historical backgrounds, famous landmarks, national parks and monuments, histo~ ; cal figures, native costumes, products, handicrafts, sports, arts, educational facilities, agricultural and industrial developments. Indiana workers will be distributed in Indiana cities with populations of 10 000 or more. They will be drafted from relief roles. Co-operation of commercial, cultural and industrial leaders of each community will he asked by the WPA. The aim is to make the document a thorough review of community activities and background. Compiled in 32 Cities As the information is compiled in the 32 cities in the state, the original maps, photographs and articles will be kept on file at the point of origin. They will be left in the custody of the local historical society, the local Chamber of Commerce, a library or at some other focal point. The material may be published locally as a county or city guide, if any local organization wiil assume responsibility for the cost.. Another copy will be sent to the state WPA office, where writers will revise edit and condense the manuscript, and combine it with the other reports from the state. This state guide also may be published. The condensed report for Indiana will be sent to Washington, where it will be combined with the reports from other states and territories. This project is the first in a series of projects the Works Progress Administration is setting up for artists, j musicians, dramatists and writers. I
