NEW DEAL BEGINS EMPLOYMENT DRIVE Must Hire 2.200.000. End Dole by Dec. 1. By United Press WASHINGTON, Oct. 25—The New Deal, determined to end direct relief Dec. 1, today began an employment drive reminiscent of CWA days. Administrator Harry L. Hopkins put 4.000.000 persons on Federal pay rolls within 10 days in November, 1933, and spent $1,000,000,000 doing it. Now, with $4,000,000,000 at his command, he must make work for 2.200,000 needy. His present task is more difficult despite his fatter pocketbook. Under CWA, he merely was stemming the tide of unemployment during the winter. His work projects were only temporary. Now, he must plan to keep a total of 3,500.000 employed for at least nine months. He promised the projects would be “useful."

STATE SENATOR OPPOSES SALES TAX PROPOSAL Claude Mcßride Expresses Stand in Letter to Realtors. “In spite of hell and high water. I never will vote for any sales tax,” Senator Claude B. Mcßride told Indiana Real Estate Association members in a letter to the organization today. The letter concerned a resolution passed by the association at its recent convention asking Gov. McNutt to call a special session of the legislature to pass tax laws. Mr. Mcßride also said he would not vote for the elimination of the emergency clause in the tax limitation, law. “until such time as the taxing municipalities of the state of Indiana have reduced their bonded indebtedness." Mr. Mcßride declares in his letter that he “would appreciate it very much if vou (Indiana Real Estate ; Association! would notify the Indiana Farm Bureau, Associated Retailers of Indiana, the Indiana Wholesalers Association, the Indiana League of Civic Associations, ... of my stand on this matter in order that I may not be annoyed by a lot of lobbyists who will waste < their time and consume my time to , no avail or benefit to themselves or me.”
