WEEDS, GRASS BURN; FIREMEN KEPT ON JUMP Chief Kennedy Points Out Danger and Cost of Carelessness. Fire Chief Fred C. Kennedy has no time to look at fall scenery and probably wouldn't like it anyway, since October is just one long headache for him. He has been busy helping put out grass and weed fires and trying to convince property owners that it is costly to start such blazes. Figures on his desk show that during the last few weeks the department has averaged 10 calls a week on grass fires. Chief Kennedy is sure that when taxpayers learn each run costs SSO, they will be more careful. To meet the problem he assigned 40 men from various engine houses to work with the fire prevention detail in various sections of the city. "If the fires still increase, I will take the matter to the Safety Board and see that, violators are prosecuted under existing city ordinances," he declared. Street Fires Forbidden These ordinances forbid building fires in streets, and allows them to do it on their own property only when the burning material Is in a container. No person is allowed to set fire to a field unless the fire department is consulted first. "There is a real hazard in these fires,” Chief Kennedy said. ‘‘A sudden high wind can whip any small bonfire out of control and endanger a neighborhood.” He pointed out that many runs of this sort are out of the city limits and in places where firemen can not obtain water. Men are tied up for hours beating out these fires with brooms, and this reduces the protection force in certain sections of the city. Leaves Choke Sewers Although Chief Kennedy is burdened by his worries, he is not alone in his trouble. It seems that many of the citizens who do not build fires try to get rid of leaves and I weeds by stuffing them in city sew- ! ers. Tins gives Claude E. Shover, i street commissioner, headaches. He has requested property owners j to pile leaves near curbs and wait j for city trucks to pick them up. "There is one funny thing about this business of being a public servant,” Mr. Shover said. “The persons who put leaves in sewers are the first to complain when drainage stops.” 4 STUDENTS PLEDGED City Youths Join Chi Gamma Delta at Cornell University.
