HIGHLIGHTS OF WEEK’S AUTOMOBILE NEWS
FEW CHANGES MADE IN 1936 PONTIAC CARS New Line Now on Display in Salesrooms of City Dealers. . nreo lines of new Pontiac models for 1936, the straight eight, six and de luxe six, are now on display at all Indianapolis Pontiac dealers’ salesrooms, and dealers throughout the country. They sell at price; which put them within the range of the lowest priced cars on the market. The “silver streak’’ radiator and hood grille that formed the central design motif of 1935 and earned for Pontiac the descriptive characterization of the “most beautiful thing on wheels,” continues as the basic theme with certain pleasing changes that reflect even greater refinement of taste and more artistic beauty than was expressed in the original. Changes Described Improvements included in the 1936 lint , according to A. J. Ressel, Indianapolis factory representative for the Pontiac Motor Cos., are greater in number than for the 1935 models and fully as important to the motorist. Many of them are not as apparent at a glance and probably none of them stand out as boldly as Fisher turret top bodies, hydraulic, triple sealed brakes or the sealed chassis of 1935. A close examination discloses that the Pontiac engineers have gone through the 1935 chassis and bodies, feature by feature, refining thi„ one and perfecting that one, keeping in mind the comfort and convenience of the motorist, and the economy, performance and safety of the car. Ride Recommended A ride in anew Pontiac model with a well informed salesman should be taken to realize the significance of many of the improvements. The straight eight and de luxe six are available in six body styles each, while seven are mounted on the six chassis. Common to all lines are two-door and four-door touring sedans, with built-in trunks, each accommodating five passengers; the standard coupe for two passengers and the sport coupe for four passengers. The cabriolet built for four passengers is also available on the six chassis. Many additional improvements and refinements embodied in the 1936 Pontiac have not been touched on. However, it is evident that none of the changes are radical, and none affect engineering fundamentals. But all are of importance to the car owner, and are part of the program of the management which has included an expenditure this year of $3,500,000 in new buildings, machinery and equipment to provide for a 100 per cent increase in manufacturing capacity.
PLYMOUTH CUSHIONS BODIES WITH RiIBSLH Less Noise and Dirt Enter 1936 Models. By Timm Special DETROIT, Oct. 23—Rubbercushioned automobile bodies, completely Insulated against road noises, will be introduced to the motoring public this month as a major feature of the 1036 Plymouth models. The new models, which will be announced formally on Saturday, will have thick rubber shims between the bodies and frames to insure smooth, quiet operation. Tests show that body rumble has been eliminated. even on cobble-stone pavements. Plymouth Is using more rubber this year than ever before, not only in the new body insulation, but also in other parts of the car. Asa result of new developments in the Plymouth rubber laboratories, the 1036 body will be sealed better against drafts, dust and dirt, according to the engineers. Every new Plymouth car that rolls ofT the assembly lines will have more than 400 rubber parts, a total of more than 40 pounds of rubber, excluding the tires and tubes. Plymouth is equipped to produce 500,000 new cars during 1936. This means the company may use more than 80,000.000 pounds of rubber. AUTO OUTPUT RISES’: ROOSEVELT CREDITED Manufacturers brought Out Models Earlier as Requested. Production of automotive vehicles showed a marked increase for the week ended Oct. 19 over last year's production, according to Cram's Reports, Inc., showing output of 44,416 units, compared to 29,068 during the same week in 1934. The increase is held to be the result of an experiment to ‘'level oil the peaks and valleys of unemployment" in the automotive industry. Complying with the request of President Roosevelt last January, manufacturers brought out 1936 models three months earlier than has been customary. Public showing dates have been scheduled in early November instead of early spring. National showing dates in Grand Central Palace, New York, will start the first week in November. The week following, 1936 models will be exhibited Nov. 9 to 16. inclusive, at the Indianapolis Silver Jubi ee show.

LOWER PRICES FOR OLDSMOBILE Zone Manager States Cut Made Possible by Heavy Demand. New low prices for 1936 Oldsmobiles were announced today coin- ; cident with the initial showing of : the new cars by all Oldsmobile dealj ers. Although every proven feature necessary to safety, comfort, performance and economy has been retained and new ones added to 1936 Oldsmobiles, the delivered prices will be lower, according to L. C. Burnett, Indianapolis zone manager for Oldsmobile. Public demand for Oldsmobile cars, which resulted in new all time highs in production and sales, has ; made the new low prices possible. “In addition to those advantages which have contributed so heavily to Oldsmobile success, such as knee action wheels, hydraulic brakes and ‘turret top’ many refinements of motor, body and chassis have been built into the new 1936 models,” he asserted. Safety glass is now standard equipment throughout in all body types. Despite the many additional values in the new cars, the lower prices will effect reductions of as much as $57.50 in the delivered prices of the Oldsmobile Eight and $17.50 in the delivered prices of the Oldsmobile Six. $25,000,000 Expended by Chevrolet for Expansion
New Indianapolis Plant One of Major Projects on Program. According to E. W. Berger, Indianapolis zone manager for Chevrolet, M. E. Coyle, president of the Chevrolet Motor Company, revealed today that the company has completed during the current year a $25,000,000 program of plant expansion, increasing the production capacity of 10 assembly plants in the United States by 25 per cent, and raising the capacity of the company's own manufacturing plants, devoted to the making of axles, engines, transmissions and other units, to enable them to keep pace with the enlarged assembly plants. The expenditure of $25,000,000 was made for the erection and equipment of new buildings at assembly and manufacturing plants, and for the re-equipment and complete modernization of existing buildings. With few exceptions, most of the operations were undertaken and carried out without announcement to the public, the list of completed improvements given out today being the first publication of details of the program. The new Indianapolis body plant, now under construction, is one of the largest projects of the program. The new buildings will total 470,400 square feet of floor space. Half of the present commercial body plant will be demolished immediately, to give way to new buildings, 600x400 feet, including a power house. Body buiJffing will continue in the remaining half of the present plant until the first stage of the new operation has been completed. The remainder of the old plant then will be razed, and anew building, 720 x 320 feet, will be erected to complete the new plant. The present office building will be retained. Batteries Take Lead Nearly 13,000,000 automobile batteries were produced in the United States last year, and 163,000 tons of lead were used in their manufacture.

NEW FINANCING PLAN STRESSES REDUCED COST Acceptance Corporation of General Motors Gives Simple Service. Anew kind of motor car financing plan which effects a lower cost to the purchaser and enables General Motors dealers to give the service in the simplest, most easily understood form, was announced yesterday by L. H. Pomeroy, manager of the Indiana division cf the General Motors Acceptance Corporation. The new plan will be known as the GMAC 6 Per Cent Plan. Mr. Pomeroy described the plan as follows: “This plan is not only the simplest and most effective of its kind, but its lower cost feature will bring all units of the 1936 General Motors line within reach of new thousands of potential car owners, and should* have a stimulating effect on the entire motor industry. To the best of our knowledge, the plan represents by far the lowest cost national plan for the purchase of new cars in the United States today. “In addition to this, the new car purchaser has for the first time in the history of automobile financing, a plan he can figure for himself. It completely eliminates those items known as ‘carrying charges,’ ‘service charges,’ etc. “This plan, we believe, will do more to put the financing of new cars on a sound business basis than anything yet conceived, since the

prospective purchaser can figure exactly what his obligation will be and his consequent ability to pay. The corporation further points out and recommends that by making the largest down payment possible and keeping the length of the payment period as short as possible, naturally, the purchaser can effect additional economy. “The plan, is, of course, being offered by dealers in Chevrolet cars and trucks. Pontiac. Oldsmobile. Buick, LaSalle and Cadillac cars.” BATTERYMADE MORE LASTING All-Rubber Separator Used to Increase Life of Firestone Product. According to F. O. Rising, manager of Firestone Service Stores , local Firestone dealers, there are three things every car owner wants in a battery. They are quick starting, maximum power and long, uninterrupted service. Firestone pioneered and developed the all-rubber separator. In battery construction it is revolutionary, as it has a porosity so great it permits a surge of current that gives 35 per cent greater starting efficiency. Because of this quick starting, the battery will not be used as much and thus the recharging is reduced. These rubber separators are unaffected by heat, cold or acid, therefore they give long, uninterrupted service. Gas Saving Hint Touring vacationists who want to keep their fuel costs to a minimum should guard against accelerating with a wide open throttle.
