JOBLESS MAN IS GRILLED IN SLAYING OF 3 Admits He ‘Might Have’ Done Shooting; 2 Others Are Dying. By United I’rrgt SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 14. George Leo Rutledge, 31, confessed to police today that he “might have" done the shooting which last night claimed three lives and sent two other persons to a hospital criticially wounded. In announcing the partial confession. Police Chief W. L. Payne said he was convinced the unemployed butcher from San Diego, Cal., was the killer. Rutledge became hysterical as the hours of inquisition wore away. He was taken to jail after his admission. Questioning will be resumed later in an attempt to establish a motive for the wild foray. Body Thrown From Car A woman identified as Blanche Nelson, Salt Lake City, packing company employe, was slain and her body thrown from an automobile near here. Police believed the victim. about 45 years old, was riding with Rutledge. Their theory was that Rutledge shot the woman, turned his gun on Mr. and Mrs. Lorin East of Salt Lake City, who chanced to be near the scene of the woman’s death, later shot George Rich, 22, as he was riding nearby in an automobile, and finally wounded a man identified as Keith Secrist, 24. Mr. and Mrs. East were slain. Rich suffered a critical head wound. Secrist was said to be near death. Arrested From Description Rutledge was arrested here soon after companions of Rich furnished officers with a description of the killer’s car. The suspect admitted, police said, that he was intoxicated when arrested. "When f take one or tw'o drinks I go cuckoo,” Chief Payne quoted him. "I don't know what I was doing.” Investigators found blood on Rutledges’ shoes. He admitted lie had been in Salt Lake City previously, and had rented a room. Officers went to the address and found blood-stained clothing that had been washed some time during the night. SLASHED BY FOOTPADS Aged City Man Recovering From Knife Wounds.
