ARMY OFFICER TO AID STATE WPA PROGRAM Maj. W. D. Spyer Will Give Most of Attention to Speeding Activity. Sacking to .spend relief work In Indiana. President Roosevelt and Administrator Harry Hopkins today announced appointment of Maj. W. D. Spyer as the Army Engineering Corps officer who will work with Wayne Coy, state and regional WPA director, in Indiana. Maj. Spyer’s area also includes Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia, much of which is under Mr. Coy’s supervision. Maj. Spyer, who will make his office at Columbus, 0., which also is Mr. Coy’s regional headquarters, conferred last week with Mr. Coy. They discussed the Indiana situation. Maj. Spyer and other engineers assigned to the area; were informed by Administrator Hopkins that; "The consulting engineers soon are to visit areas to which they are assigned and state works progress administrators are requested to afford them every facility for obtaining full information concerning the program in every state, with particular regard to matters which are hampering the speedy development of the program.” Indiana is included in the national drive to place 3,500,000 persons to work by Nov. l. Several thousand Indiana families are affected. Maj. Spyer has been located in Pittsburgh as an army engineer. WINCHELL ASKED TO OPEN BAR SHOW HERE Officials Keep Ears to Keyhole for Gossip’s Answer. Walter Winchell, columnist and radio gossip, has been invited to preside at the opening ceremonies of Indiana's first annual bar and restaurant equipment exposition Monday. Oct. 28. in the Manufacturers Building at the State Fairground. Officials of the show have not as yet received Mr. Winchell’s acceptance. The exposition will continue through Saturday, Nov. 2. BREWERS WARNED NOT TO CONTROL OUTLETS Gifts, Rebates, Financial Backing, Are Prohibited Fry Repeats. Paul P. Fry. state excise administrator, today warned breweries not to attempt to obtain control of retail beer outlets by gifts. Oct. 10.—Trials of Powers Hapgood, Indianapolis, and two other Socialist organizers have been postponed by City Judge Joseph M. Duffy until Nov. 8. Mr. Hapgood, Socialist candidate to? Governor in 1932, was taken for interfering with an officer when he protested the arrest of Aaron Gilmartin, Des Moines, la., national executive secretary of the Socialist and Labor Defense League, and Leo Vernon. 23-year-old Madison (Wis.) Socialist. The trio participated in a vigorous campaign against "military dictatorship’’ in Vigo County growing out of a turbulent labor situation. Mr. Hapgood, who is free under SIOOO bond, has continued the campaign, making speeches almost daily in Indiana and surrounding states. Mr. Vernon and Mr. Gilmartin were released under SSOO bonds. Earlier arrests of Mr. Hapgood and Mr. Vernon precipitated a visit to Terre Haute by Norman Thomas, titular head of the Socialist Party.

BUILDERS WILL ERECT SECOND MODEL HOUSE Tentative Arrangements for Site Being Made by Local Group. A second model house will be built by the Indianapolis Home Builders’ Association, which sponsored the construction of “Beautiiity House.’’ at 5815 N. Delaware-st. At present, the association is making tentative arrangements to secure a site. Association members have decided to defer their fall outing until “Beautiiity House” is sold. Several prospective buyers are considering the property, which will be open for
