INDIANA SALES OF BABY BONDS TOP $284,000 $225,806 of Total Disposed of in Indianapolis, U. S. Reveals. The peopl** of Indianapolis hae bought *225.80625 worth of the United States "Baby Bonds" since they went on sale March 1, sales accounting for nearly all of Indiana* total of *284,756.25. This, Adolph Seidenstlcker, Indianapolis post master, says. Is evidence tn abundance to him that the people believe in their government. The bonds vary from the investment of men with large incomes, the thrifty savings of housewives’ pin money, and the savings of school teachers and stenographers to birthday gift* and investments to take ithe place of annuity Insurance. 7-Year-Old I* Buyer Shortly after bonds went on sale, 7-year-old Joseph J. Ryan, son oi Mr. and Mrs. Joseph F. Ryan, 1823 N. Delaware-st, bought a SSO bond with money which he had saved from selling papers and doing odd jobs He made out his own application. and proudly carried the bond from the postoffice. Recently a 97-year-old Civil War veteran bought a bond. As the certificate was being made out, he recalled battles In which he took part to strengthen the nation which 70 years later gave him through these bonds, opportunity to leave a safe legacy. The veteran named his son as beneficiary. ‘ Foreigners who buy the bonds,” said Murl Bridgewater, a clerk, "are concerned with their safety. Anxious About Safety “They always ask. both before and after buying the bonds, if they are safe, even in the case of loss or theft,” Mr. Bridgewater said. “I explain that they are registered, and that they can not lose their money." Older persons, past the age where annuity insurance can be obtained at attractive figures, are buying the bonds to assure themselves of an income in later life. One bachelor buys a $25 bond each month; another elderly man purchases a SIOO bond monthly. A number of widows have transferred their insurance money, collected on the deaths of their husbands, into the bonds. When the bonds first wpnt on sale, many large bills were presented at the bond office. So unusual are the old fashioned bills that the first that appeared were examined by secret service men, to determine if they were counterfeit. Application Blanks Mailed One woman brought in S2O of her money in pennies, which she had been saving for some time. Monday, 135.000 application blanks in postcard form were distributed through the mail to Indianapolis householders. By early Monday afternoon. a number of persons visited the bond sale office at the Federal building, bringing the applications with them, and money to purchase bonds. The office is open each Saturday afternoon until 4, to take care of bond sales. Three clerks, Mr. Bridgewater. Ora C. Workman, and Frederick H. Banta, are on duty each day to take care of bond purchases P.-T. A. TO CONTINUE CITY SAFETY DRIVE Council to Discuss Summer Program May 22.
