ARMY PURCHASE METHODS PROBE TO BE OPENED High Ranking Officers to Be Called by Committee, McSwain Says. By t Hil'il Pr*>*• WASHINGTON'. May 3—High ranking Armv officer* will n* called before the House Military Affairs Committee this month, it was learned today. :o testify concerning War Department purchase methods. Plans for hearings have no reia’ion to the fiurrv over publication of executive session testimony of Army officers regarding war plans which cau-ed President Roosevelt to rebuke Chairman .John J. McSwain. Six trunks full of data were gathered in a three-months War Department inquiry by former Rep W FYank James <R., M;r-h.>, a committee investigation He was assisted by two representatives of the Controller Generals office. The investigation grows out of findings by a subcommittee last session, which resulted in a demand for retirement of Maj. Gen. Benjamin D Foulois as Army Air Corps chief and more recently brought sharp criticism by George H. Dem. •Secretary of War, of Coi. Joseph I McMullen. Mr. McSwain said the committee planned to start open hearings by June 1. It was understood that 'he inquiry would turn particularly to alleged graft in surplus material sales.
