CANADA HANGS AX SLAYER OF AGED MOTHER Matricide ‘Has No Regrets,' Urges Executioners to Greater Speed. By United Press .¶ BELLEVILLE. Ontario. May 2. ― Harold Vermilyea. who hacked his 76-year-old mother to death with a hatchet, was hanged in the Belleville jail yard at 12:10 a. m. today. .¶ The Ontario (Cal.) man was an impatient figure exhorting his executioners to speed as he was led into the dimly lighted yard. He showed no emotion and his voice was without expression as he uttered his last words. .¶ “Let’s get on with this." he urged guards as his hands were being bound. “I have no regrets. Whatever error I committed was for those I love. I had no intention of killing my mother. I didn't know what I was doing.’’ Legion to Give Dinner .¶ A chicken supper and card party will be given at 6 tonight by Wayne Post 64, American Legion, at 6311 W. Washington-st.

HARDLY a dav pas,ses without some individual, awe peering from his wide eyes, asking me the all-inclusive question: How does it feel to fly in an airplane?" And each individual, almost without exception. seems disappointed when I tell of the pleasure of flying—of the romance of looking down on the earth—of the grandeur of the panorama of horizons 40 miles away! For they seem to expect bloodcurdling stories —hair-raising thrills —steel nerves cheating the grim reaper, and oh! what a mistake! And here at my home in Garden City as I am jotting down these few thoughts the roar overhead of Roosevelt Field planes mingle with the soft music coming to me via radio. The glorious harmonies of Lohengrin—that beautiful opera! But just as no music, however lovely; no description of a sunrise, or of moonlight on the water, can do full justice to the subject, neither can any arrangements of printed words do mors than hint at the beauty and grandeur of this planet when viewed through the portals made possible by aviation. Mighty rivers that conld drown the population of our largest cities look like thin silver ribbons; mountains that rise thousands of feet look like toy blocks placed in some sort of casual order ov the hands of a promising child who may some

day be an architect—and they look just about as unimportant. Yes—the cares and worries of daily life seem to leave you as you look down on the earth from the heavens. Certainly there are thrills and plenty of excitement in flying—if ; you go looking for it. Why, you can find pulse-quicken- ! ing danger in racing automobiles or motorboats—or jumping fences on horseback; but not in straightaway flying such as will fall to your lot if you ride in air transports. Oi course, if your life work is devoted to aviation you'll find all the excitement you want in experimental work—flight-testing new airplanes—in high speed research. Yes, sir' You’ll find out what it's all about to be in real trouble and on j your own.
