A Woman’s Viewpoint BY MRS. WALTER FERGUSON
“T CALL it downright selfish," said X the small woman in the cocky red hat, who was the most articulate o i the five bewailing the opening of a taproom at our club. A taproom, mind you, which would be barred to women. A cloud of discontent hung over the room. Pouts pulled at rouged lips, and the air was charged with feminine anger. But beneath the apologetic excuses of the men one caught a ring of exultation. Bright gleams of Joy j shone from their eyes, and outside they snickered together like naughty boys outwitting their mothers. The women sensed all this, although they closed their eyes to it and so managed to preserve the illusion of their power, a power which has been misused and is on the' wane. For we have trickled after men like slow molasses. Inexorably we have trailed them, into their offices, i clubs, golf courses, barber shops and , saloons. Now r and then the pursuif assumes the proportions of a chase, so that our hearts are moved with pity for the poor wretches who, in all theii great world, have no place to which they can go to escape their women. With no privacy at home', no rooms of their own, with their offices cluttered with girls, their j streets impassable with shoppers,' their voting booths jammed, their, verv bars occupied by matron and j maid, the American man finds him- 1 self literally a lost soul in a universe of women. Perhaps, after all, he doesn’t particularly mind our going into business with him or entering professions or meddling with politics or hogging the baseball grandstand Perhaps he’s merely tired of having us eternally under foot. Sometimes

I get a little tired of us myself, and so I can imagine how the men must feel as we come popping out from behind doors, or sner.k up on them 3t their clubs, or push their feet off the bar rails. If women know’ what’s good for them, they’ll begin to make themselves scarce in certain places sacred to the men and not go breaking’ down the taproom doors. SHIP MAIL PROVISIONS CHANGED BY PRESIDENT j Contract Clauses of Pending Bill Altered to Roosevelt Wishes. Srripfm-lfoirarrl Xeiripnper AUinnrt WASHINGTON. April 25—The mail contract provisions of the pending ship-subsidy bill have been abandoned because of Administration pressure. The first draft of the bill, as offered by Senator Royal Copeland <D„ N. Y.). authorized the Postmaster General to enter into contracts with ship operators on much the same basis as at present. The second draft, just made public, omits this feature. Senator Copeland said the President felt that the government should be in a position to transport mail on any ship—the way it handles railroad mail. He said Mr. Roosevelt also was holding to the position expressed in a message to Congress that "hidden subsidies. ’’ such as the ocean mail contracts, must be eliminated. TARZAN AND THE LION MAN
Rhonda Terry quailed before the piercing, demoniac gaze of the hideous gorilla-man. And the strange glint in his eyes gave evidence of some horrible plan revolving in his mind. ‘’Yes,” he grinned; “both of you are admirably fitted for my scientific research.”

From the pocket of his shirt he extracted a couple of crudely fashioned cheroots, one of which he proffered through the bars to Tarzan. “I do not smoke, thank you,” said the ape-man. “You do not know what you miss.” the other replied; “tobacco is such a boon to tired nerves.”

“My nerves are never tired,” Tarzan replied. His captor surveyed him with new interest. “That is fortunate—for me. I could not ask for anything better than a combination of youth and a healthy nervous system. I shall be wholly regenerated! I shall be anew being!”

“I do not know what you are talking about,* said Tarzan. “Os course not. How could you understand what I alone know? But you shall know soon enough!” Tarzan gazed into the monster’s eyes, as if to probe his secret, but in them he found no key to the mystery.
