A Womans Viewpoint —BY MRS. WALTER FERGUSON

SOCIAL work has a definite appeal for the modern girl. It calls into being the maternal instincts which lie so near the surface of every woman's heart. There is great opportunity in this field. The need for workers was never more acute. But the girl is unwise to rush thoughtlessly into it without weighing her fitness for the task. Social workers, when they are effective, possess certain qualifications which are seldom learned in training schools but are instead the gifts of Heaven. Patience, ingenuity, cheerfulness and the kind of sympathy and understanding that is tempered with practic?sense. Nothing is so dreadful as a person working among the poor and sick who does not have a knowledge of the needs of the human heart nor realize the fatal weakness of mortals. What happens to the worker herself is often tragic. One of two things is likely to occur. Either she is so moved by the sorrow, pain and she sees that her point of view becomes warped ar. 1 she ends up as a fanatic, or ohe builds up a resistance within herself to the pressure of all the outside woe which may change her into a cold hard person unfit to deal with suffering humanity. Sh> is dangerously apt to turn out a cynic or a sentimentalist. A divine sixth sense Is needed. One must have the pentration to see beneath the exterior of miserysodden men and v amen and to search out the truth behind the barrier of deceits built up by the unworthy and the irreclaimable.

Above all, one dare not lose the personal touch nor lack imagination to see the human hulk restored to respectability, the erring girl become the dependable woman and the bad boy grow into a citizen of repute. The vision should indeed go much further. The social worker must also be able, to visualize a world where justice will be given by the strong to the weak. With all its hardships it is one of the noblest of professions, and to one who labors sincerely it brings glorious spiritual rewards.

The creature grinned hideously as it addressed Tarzan through the bars. “So you came to get her, did you? I thought you had come to call on me. Os course, It Is not quite the proper thing for a stranger to come by night without an invitation—and by stealth.”

"I came for this girl!” said the ape-man. “And now you are my prisoner,” the creature chuckled. “What do you want of us?” Tarzan demanded; “we have not harmed you.” “What do I want of you? That is a long story. But perhaps you two would understand it.

“The beasts with which 1 am surrounded hear, but they do not understand,” the monster continued. “Before you serve my final purpose I shall keep you for a while for the pleasure of conversing with rational human beings. I have not seen any for a long time—a long, long time.
