E. E, GATES SR., G, 0, P. LEADER, IS DEAD AT 63 Prominent Lawyer Succumbs After Long Illness: Rites Wednesday. Edward E. Gates Sr., prominent Indianapolis attorney and active member of the Republican party, died yesterday in his home, 1901 N. Delaware-st, following an illness of two years. Mr. Gates was 63. Private funeral services will be held at the home Wednesday, with burial in Crown Hill. A daughter, Mrs. A. J. McKelvey, New York, who is on a vacation tnp in Bermuda, will be unable to reach Indianapolis in time for the services. Mr. Gates was in active service in Puerto Rico during the SpanishAmerican War. He returned to Indianapolis several years after ihe war, and resumed his legal practice, in which he gained attention for his successful fight against discriminatory railroad rates in the Indianapolis district. He was a member of the law' firm of Henley, Matson & Gates during this litigation. When Judge William J. Henley, member of the firm, moved from Indianapolis, the firm became Matson, Gates <te Ross. In 1915 Mr. Gates formed a partnership with Quincy A. Myers, former Indiana Supreme Court judge, the firm name being Myers & Gates. In 1917 Samuel M. Ralston joined the firm. Upon the death of Mr. Myers, in 1922, the firm was changed to Ralston, Gates, Lairy, VanNuys & Barnard. This firm was dissolved later, and Mr. Gates became a member of the firm of Gates, Hoffman Tilson, in which he remained until his death. Mr. Gates was educated in Indianapolis schools, Yale University, New York Law School and the Indiana University Law School. He was a member of the Central Christian Church, president of the Kiwanis Club in 1918 and 1919, and w r as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Columbia Club. Indianapolis Athletic Club. Indianapolis Country Club, the old Marion Club. Hoosier Athletic Club, Academy of Music, Dramatic Club, the Royal Arcanum and the Berzilius Society of Yale. He also was a member of the Royal Jesters, Murat Shrine, York Rite. Centre Lodge No. 23, Free and Accepted Masons; Knights of Pythias and the Spanish War Veterans. Surviving him are the widow'. Mrs. Dorothy Gates; two sons, Edward E. Gates Jr., resident manager of Harris, Upham <fc Cos., members of the New York Stock Exchange, and William N. Gates, all of. Indianapolis. and two daughters, Mrs. A. J. McKelvey and Miss Virginia Gates, both of New York. Pastor's Son Dead John Goddard Harms. 6-year-old son of the Rev. and Mrs. John W. Harms. 19 N. Irvington-av, died yesterday of meningitis, following a throat infection. Funeral services will be held at 9:45 tomorrow in the Clyde V. Montgomery Funeral Home, 1622 N. Meridian-st. The body will be taken to Enid, Okla., for burial. The child was a pupil at School 57, and attended Sunday school at the Third Christian Church. Mr. Harms is a religious education director for Discipies of Christ churches in Indiana. The family has lived in Indianapolis since September. Surviving are the parents and a baby sister. Ben Nathanson The appointment of Ben Nathanson, 3540 N. Meridian-st, as head of the dramatic and musical department of Camp Moriah, a Jewish summer camp near Grand Junction, Mich., has been announced. Mr. Nathanson also j will conduct classes in jour- ; nalism. He is a junior student in the Indiana University administration school and played on the all-American band two years. The camp opens July 5 and will continue for eight weeks. It accommodates 225 boys between the ages of 8 and 17.
