Robert Lewis, taxicab bandit, was found guilty yesterday by a Criminal Court Jury on charges of robbery and automobile banditry. The verdict carries a mandatory sentence of 10 to 25 years in the Indiana State Prison. Lewis was charged with the holdup of a taxi driver Jan. 10 and the theft of $7.60.

Hundreds of City Children to Sing Carols on Monument Steps Sunday

At 6:30 Easter Sunday morning hundreds of children, all clad In white, will sing carols on the north steps of the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument on the Circle. Mrs. James M. Ogden is founder and director of the service which will be held at the same hour in Circle Theater if the weather is unfavorable for outdoor singing. ant United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, where Schultz was investigated for three years, testified that certain flies, Including telephone records obtained from the New York Telephone Cos., had disappeared more than two years ago. Mr. Tarbell disclosed that when he opened his office on Feb. 27. 1933, he noticed that the drawer containing the Shultz files had been “molested.'’ Files of other cases, kept in the same drawer, were not molested, Mr. Tarbell testified. Records cf delivery of gas and oil to a chain of garages in the Bronx were among the missing papers, he said. The government charges that it was from these garages that Schultz distributed beer to various speakeasies.

CHICAGO U. PRESIDENT WELCOMES ‘RED’ PROBE Illinois Legislature Votes Inquiry on Communist Charge. By United Press CHICAGO, April 19.—President Robert Maynard Hutchins of the University of Chicago today welcomed—with open arms—an inquiryauthorized by the Illinois Senate of charges of communistic activities in educational institutions. The legislative investigation, authorized by a vote of 28 to 11 in the Senate, followed “red” charges made by Charles R. Walgreen. “The University of Chicago stands upon its record with complete assurance.” Dr. Hutchins said today. “It welcomes an unbiased inquiry by competent authorities and will give the inquiry every assistance within its power.”

3 ESCAPE PENALTY IN GIRL DELINQUENCY CASE Suspended Sentence* Given Two By Judge Geckler. Juvenile Judge John H. Geckler found three men guilty of contributing to the delinquency of a 15-year-old girl, and suspended sentences and fines on all three. Juvenile Court records were revised yesterday to show. The men are Claude I. Brillhart. 53. president of the Indiana Asphalt Paving Cos.. 29 S. Highland-av; Harry Jarvis. 28, 1624 Ludlow-av. and James Stacey, 43.519 E. Ohio-st. All three were given short State Farm sentences and fined $1 each, both suspended, and in addition were placed on probation for one year. A similar charge against Earl Stutesman, 35, of 245 S. Randolphst, is pending.
