WERE still way up in the northwest comer of India today. Our friend, the British flying officer, has just had his radiator and oil pump pierced by tribesmen's bullets. The pilot radioed to Preshawar that he had been hit and was going down to a forced landing near the legation at Kabul. Immediately, another ship was sent out from Pershawar . . . and in order to prevent any accusation that British airmen were taking part in local fighting, each plane was stripped of machine guns and the pilots themselves left their revolvers behind. Arriving over the legation, the second flier again received the signal. “Do not land ... fly high.” The ship remained at a safe altitude. Patrols were then established, the airmen relieving one another at certain intervals. The legation people tcch heart . . . The aircraft overhead slowly turned in long patroling circles, like policemen on a beat. Thus, at least some sort of communication was established with the threatened legations. The next Job was to drop a radio sending-set by parachute into the British legation. For the job it was necessary to fly good and low, to be sure the transmitter reached its destination. But low-flying meant gunfire ... so two ships were sent. One was to act as a decoy and arrive over the legation five minutes before the other machine appeared. Os oriental parentage, he w r ill nevertheless live an occidental life, and that incldes going to Sunday school. And it is an occidental as well as an oriental custom to obey ones parents, so Elmer will do that also. Thus spoke Juvenile Judge John Geckler today to Elmer, who is 15, and who nodded respectfully, agreed to the decision, and left the courtroom with his Chinese father, Charlie Yee. to go back to their lean-to home at 417 N. West-st. But the judge called him back fhr a moment, it had, the judge said, come to the court's ears that Elmer
had acquired a passion for, and proficiency in, & distinctly occidental game—shooting craps. Elmer will retain enough of his oriental leanings, the court said, to drop all interest in that game. Elmer said that, yes sir he would, and the rupture between Elmer and his father was healed, just as his lather, when he had his son taken into custody, thought it would be, and just as Elmer expected.
