DESERT GRASS IMPORTED TO ‘RESCUE’ WEST Department of Agriculture Hard at Work on Dust Problem. By United Prraa WASHINGTON, April 19—The Department of Agriculture has imported some tough foreigners to deal with dust storms. From the deserts of far-off Turkestan. C. R. Enlow and H. L. Westover, department “plant explorers,” today brought seeds of grasses and legumes which grow in the hottest, driest climates. If the plants can be made to grow Under conditions duplicating those of the Western great plains where the dust menace originates, the department hopes to build up a large supply of soil-anchoring seeds for distribution to farmers. Mr. Enlow said the Imported seed “can't possibly enter into -mergency phases of the erosion control program,” but would be "very valuable later on.” In four or live years, he estimated, the Turkish seed can be Introduced on a large scale. Brings Back Desert Grass In the collection brought back by Mr. Enlow after a seven months's exploration is a desert grass called aristida pennata which survives uprooting by the wind. It grows in scattered clumps on the wind-swept sands of the Kara Kum desert and when whipped away takes root again where it lands. Like a cat. this grass lands on its ‘‘feet/ * Another plant well-adapted to halt the drifting sand dunes of the : parched dust territory is a Turkistan sedge which grew in a Washington greenhouse despite four waterless months. Mr. Enlow traced the conditions which produce dust storms directly to the World War. Called upon to supply foreign nations with bread, American farmers plpwed up an additional 10,000,000 acres and planted, it to wheat. The native buffalo and blue grama grasses so suited to the

PLANS LONGEST HOP

A 4500-mile hop from New York’s Bennett Field to Kaunas, Lithuania —which would be the longest solo flight ever made—is planned by Felix Waitkus, above, 25-year-old Kohler <Wis.) aviator. With five years' flying experience, Waitkus intends to take off on the trans-Atlantic “good will" venture in May or June.
Great Plains area were virtually wiped out. The department is experimenting with these grasses and trying to persuade farmers to reintroduce them, keep cattle off until they get a good hold and maintain them to prevent recurrence of dust storms. War-time plowing for wheat cultivation destroyed so much grass that only a small quantity of seed remains and it will be years before the supply is built to such proportions that reseeding can be conducted on any extensive scale. Returning acres to buffalo grass presents a particularly difficult problem, Mr. Enlow said. This type of grass can not be seeded, the only way to get it started being to transplant clods of earth in which it is growing.
STATE RECORD IS PERFECT ON HOUSINGLOANS Not a Single Hoosier Has Defaulted Payment, Ad Club Told. Not a single delinquent payment is recorded in Indiana, among the $770,500 insured loans made through the Federal Housing Administration, James R. Branson told members of the Indianapolis Advertising Club yesterday. The loans cover a period of eight months, and are a part of those which total $54,240,871 throughout the country, under the National Housing Act. Applications for mortgage loans to date in Indiana, Mr. Branson said, total $460,000. “There is an amendment now before Congress which will increase the limit of modernization loans, for business property only, from S2OOO to $50,000. If this goes through there will be further opportunity for improvement of stores, factories, warehouses, office buildings, hotels and apartment houses,” he said. 1., a recent farm survey in Indiana, 190 farm repair jobs were listed in one county. All of these jobs may be financed through Federal housing loans, Mr. Branson said. If

Weiland, vice chairman of the repair and modernization program committee, said today. ‘•With the help of the Federal Housing Administration plan for loans, most of these houses can be put into shape by the end of the year,” Mr. Weiland said. Many houses, now standing vacant, would bring a fair rental return if properly equipped, Mr. Weiland said.
