A Woman’s Viewpoint BY MRS. WALTER FERGUSON
THERE ha* been too much talk—and I have done some of it—about the lifting of the housewife* burden by labor-saving devices. We •re wont to think of American women as they exist in Uch houses, or •it shout bridge tables, or shop in opulent stores. Survey* made in this country, however, give us another and a less pleasant picture. In drab tenements. along the frayed fringe of little towns, and the bedraggled outskirts of great cities, in the depleted cotton lands of the South and the cluttered foreign sections of the West Coast and Atlantic Seaboard, there are conditions which give an ironic meaning to the title “Rich America." "Poverty-St irken America" would better describe us. For every kind of human misery exists. Families sleep four and five in a bed. or upon tarpaulin-covered hay on the floor. There is no sanitation, no convenience, no meager creature comfort. According to statements made after h recent survey, less than half the homes in the United States possess minimum standards of health and decency. More than a million residents of New York City have no bathing facilities. Overcrowding is the great evil—and overcrowding, mind you, upon a continent which, as ,ou travel over It, s*ems limitless. Within these tumbled shack , and narrow, airless apartments develop some of our gravest social evils. Bad health, bad morals, wretchedness, sullenness, and sometimes a kind of resignation which is more dreadful than revolt. So, when you consider our laborsaving devices—shining electric stoves and white refrigerators, smooth sinks, humming vacuum cleaners,

TARZAN AND THE LION MAN
Tarzan leaped for the stakes that bristled at the top of the wall. His hands closed on two of them. Then he drew himself up slowly until he leaned on the stakes and the top of the wall. Now he looked down, but he saw no sign of life-only a dark, shadowy, deserted alleyway.

THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES
Swiftly the ape-man dropped down, inside the weird city of the gorillas, and set out cautiously toward the distant glow of lights. Presently the wild boom of drums rose above the city. Shortly thereafter Tarzan came to a flight of steps which were cut from the solid face of the cliff.
—By Ahern
Warily he mounted the steps that led upward into the gloom toward the dim outlines of a gigantic castle. Soon he was able to see over the castle wall into a courtyard where gorillas danced in flickering torchlight. As he watched, a fire was lighted near the fantastic figures.

Thedry fuel blazed high, revealing as if in daylight the weird rites in the courtyard. The flames illuminated, too, the stairway Tarzan was ascending. With lightning speed he flattened himself against the cliff. Already, perhaps, the light had revealed him to the beasts!
