HER TO GO BACK ON STAND TO FINISH TALE Bit of Wallpaper Is Major Piece of Evidence in Kidnap Trial. T,'nit"t Pren ST. PAUL. Apnl 17.—A bit of cheap flowered wallpaper became evidence of major importance today in the trial of 10 persons accused ol conspiring to kidnap Edward G. Bremer, wealthy banker whose father is a close friend of President Roosevelt. Dist. Atty. George H. Sullivan said Mr. Bremer, returning to the witness stand to complete the story of his seizure on a St. Paul street and 21 days of negotiation for a $200,000 ransom, would use the scrap of paper to connect the defendants with the crime. The paper is from the home of Harold Alderton. one of the defendan*s. in Bensenville, 111. Mr. Bremer will oe asked to identify it as from the room where he was held, almost continuously blindfolded, for three weeks. The 37-year-old financier attacked his accused abductors yesterday with almost a full day of detailed narration of his ordeal. Erect in the witness chair and seemingly enjoying the climax of his adventure, he laid the groundwork of evidence which may ultimately semi 20 or more persons to penitentiaries for life. Twenty-one men and one woman have been indicted for conspiracy in the kidnaping. He revealed for the first time that 1 his kidnapers “saved” him from another gang by refusing to “sell” him after ransom was collected. When he was released in Rochester, Min., he said, one of his captors told him they had been offered “a certain amount of money” to turn him over to a second gang which would collect another ransom. “Were playing fair,” the man said. Mr Bremer probably will be asked today to identify some of the accused persons, but has indicated he will be unable to do so. He was blinued with goggles immediately after being slugged in his motor car and kept blindfolded, except at rare intervals, until his release. Defense attorneys planned to subject Mr. Bremer to an exhaustive cross-examination which may keep him on the stand all day. They will attempt to break down his identification of photographs of Alderton's home and show that he could not have made the minute observations he claimed. ORIENTAL RUG THIEVES ACTIVE IN CITY AGAIN Home on North Side Looted While Family Is Absent. Police today were in possession of new information on the operations of rug thieves who. in the last six months, have gather $12,000 worth of loot from Marion County’ homes. Mrs. L. M. Green. 5150 N. Dela-ware-st, told police that a car stopped last night in front of the home of Charles S. Wiltse, across the street, when the Wiltse family was away from home. A man, bareheaded and bald, left the car and went whistling up to the door, entered, and came out with some rugs. He put them in the car in which a companion, remained. Police could not tell how many rugs had been taken. The thief apparently entered with a pass key. MAYORS SEEK CHANGE IN TAX DISTRIBUTION Larger Cities Are Not Getting Fair Share, Kern Asserts. Twenty-seven mayors and other officials from 15 of Indiana's largest cities met today with Mayor John W. Kern and members of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce to lormulate a plan for a more equitable distribution of state-collected taxes. They decided to formulate a program to this end and present it to the Governor’s tax investigation committee some time before the meeting of the next Legislature. Mayor Kem. speaking for the group, said that larger centers of population in the state are not getting a just share of the taxes in proportion to the amount they are taxed. SHERIFF ACTS TO END JAIL DOPE SMUGGLING Gifts to Prisoners Limited I'nder New Order to Halt Practice. In a strenous effort to halt smugbling of narcotics into the Marion County Jail. Sheriff Otto Ray announced today that a ruling has been put into effect that visitors may bnng in only clothing and money to prisoners. The narcotics often were concealed in tobacco and cigarets. he said. “Os course it is impossible to open up every cigaret. so I made the new ruling." Sheriff Ray declared.
