Show Opens But Blooms Are Lacking Bryn Mawr Balked by Bad Weather. BY FIEL3N WORDEN Tlm *• prrll Writer NEW YORK, April 18— It looks as If they'd have to pin paper flowers on the plants in the Gardens of the Nations today, at Rockefeller Center. This is the formal opening. We've had nothing but rain, wind and fog for a week. Coax as the gardeners would, magnolia trees, dogwood, hyacinths and flowering crab have refused to unfold a bud, even though the Bryn Mawr grads have picked the international gardens as the background for their fete! The proceeds of today's show go to the Bryn Mawr million dollar drive. , When I made a grand tour of the exotic gardens on the eleventh floor unit of Rockefeller Center last week, artificial blooms had been wired on the plants for the benefit of photographers. Sunshine Needed “Everything's coming along swell,” a gardener said, “but the plants need a sunny day or two.” Spring flowers bloomed yesterday afternoon in the Myron Taylor mansion at 16 E. 70th-st. The head of the United States Steel Trust and his wife had invited those intertesd in the Metropolitan Opera to come have a cup of tea and bear Herbert Witherspoon, new director of the Metropolitan, discuss plans for next eeason. The liveried footman at the head of the grand stairway announced names in a deep bass voice.” “Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt,” he called, as the wife of Gen. Vanderbilt, neatly turned out in black velvet and silver fox, stepped into the tapestry-hung reception hall. "Mrs. James B. Duke,” the mother of America's richest girl, was frocked in gray, with a silver fox cape for a finishing touch. Mrs. Kahn Attends "Mrs. Otto Kahn.” The widow of the former president of the Metropolitan Opera board came in a simple black suit trimmed in Persian lamb. Mrs. Taylor herself, wore a bright electric blue crepe dress, a small-brimmed black straw hat and pearl ear-rings of the sort that impress you. ” Mr. and Mrs. Taylor have gone in for opera in a big way. They both sere fond of music. He appeared on the stage of the Metropolitan last Friday night as a burgher in the second act of “Der Meistersinger.” Dressed in a medieval costume, with a plumed velvet cap, the director of United States Steel’s future looked like a member of the Court of Henry VIII.

Isn't easy to forget Bart, but Irene fir .is solace in the friendship of Virginia Cr.thcart and her fiance. Bill Naugnton. V ith them she is amused by the n merous love affairs of Eve Meadows, avo also shares the girls’ apartment. * liene happens to meet Stephen Reagan Jr., on the plane, and encourages hla friendlv overtures because she feels she can strike back at Bart through him. Stephen la u terly charming She learns that Bart nas become engaged to Stephen's sister. Peggy, a petulant, spoiled girl of 18. Returning from a date with Stephen, Irene is surprised to find Eva waiting up for her. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY CHAPTER TEN—CONTINUED “But I still don’t see how I can help her,” Irene insisted. “Oh, she's as imitative as a monkey. If she likes you, she’ll soon be copying everything about you.” Was that his reason then for wanting her to come to dinner, merely that she might appear as a model for Peggy? “This had nothing to do with my wanting to see you again,” Steve said, with his uncanny ability to read her mind. “My interest is purely personal.” “I’ve been very poor company tonight,” she apologized. “You’ve been perfect,” he contradicted. "If there’s anything I dislike it is a prattling woman.” It was queer but everything she did seemed to suL him while with Bart everything she said or did now was wrong. Could it be because two persons were only intended to be completely harmonious for a limited period? Then diverge into their own separate personalities? “You have been awfully nice to me,” she said gratefully. “I told you I liked you,” he reminded her. “And I’m one person who knows his own mind. It runs in our family. Even Peggy knows what she wants and leaves no stone unturned to get it ” Although it was almost 4 o’clock when they reached the apartment, the lights were on in Eve’s bedroom. “Come in here,” she said. “I want to talk to you.” CHAPTER ELEVEN EVE had been crying. Irene glanced into the other bedroom which was open and unoccupied, and asked kindly, “What’s the matter, Eve?” but she was thinking, “It’s almost 4 o’clock and I’m tired. I suspose she’s had a fight with one of her boy friends.” One couldn’t take Eve’s tears seriously. She wept too beautifully. Round tears rolled so smoothly down her cheeks that they looked artificial. The mere fact that she seemed to have found a sympathetic listener started them flowing again. “I'm in love,” she confessed. Since this was supposed to be her habitual state of mind, Irene was not alarmed. “Well, why cry about it? Is it the vacuum cleaner man or the one from Seattle?” “Neither of them. It’s Bill” At last she had succeeded in rousing the other girl’s interest. ‘ You don’t mean that,” Irene said snarply. “Oh, yes, I do! I’ve been crazy about him ever since Paula and I came here to live. All these other affairs are just smoke screens . . “He doesn't know it?” “Sometimes I think he does.” “But, Eve, Virginia and Bill are engaged. You’ve no right.” “Oh. no? Listen, Irene, any one as in love as I am has a right to do anything.” Sitting in the center of her disordered bed with her long blond hair falling about her shoulders, she

looked like a Lorelei. One of those golden-haired Eirens who could lure a man to death with her sweet, wild singing. And after all. thought Irene, Bill Naughton was only human. She remembered his attitude to Eve the night she had come home late. How Bill, who hadn’t budged from his chair all evening, had served her with strawberries and cream. “It would Kill Virginia to lose him,” she said. “What about me?” the other girl demanded, drying eyes like drowned violets. “How do you suppose I feel always seeing them together? Having to pretend to be crazy about someone else all the time?”

Solution to Previous Contract Problem BY W. E. M’KENNEY Secretary American Bridee Leaeue T WONDER if future important events in bridge are not going to be the mixed events. In the recent Eastern tournament, which has the largest entry of any of the major tournaments, only 14 teams were in the open team-of-four contest, while in the mixed team-of-four events 29 teams were entered. This goes to prove that bridge, even in championship tournaments, is still a social game. The strain in the mixed events is not as great as in the opens, either. Here's an interesting hand selected from the first session of the mixed team-of-four in the Eastern. Avery

IRENE recalled the night she had opened the door to find Eve in a strange man's arms. “You seem able to give a pretty good imitation of it,” she reminded her dryly. “I know what you're referring to, Irene. But I’m so terribly unhappy at time, I have to do something.” “All right, but *hy the tears on this particular occasion?” Eve's eyes filled afresh. “The lumberman left for Seattle yesterday and Mr. Carney was out of town, so about noon I telephoned Bill and asked him if he wouldn’t like to come over tonight and keep me from being lonesome. He said he’d love to, but he had a terrible cold and was going to bed early.” (To Be Continge)

nice play was made by one pair in an attempt to defeat four hearts. tt n n \ DIAMOND was opened, and - i -A- wa s won with the ace. The king of spades was returned, West played the nine, and East refused to win. A heart was played by declarer and won by West with the ace. A small spade was returned, which East won with the ace, and the return of a spade was ruffed by West, holding the contract to four odd. Against a four-spade contract West leads the jack of clubs, South ruffing with the three of spades. Declarer realizes that he must establish the heart suit and he also has to stop a possible heart ruff. It does not look as if West holds the singleton heart, or he might have opened it. East has done some bidding. Undoubtedly he is short in hearts and has the missing ace of trump. With this reasoning South immediately leads the queen of hearts. West wins with the ace. If at this point he returns a heart, East will ruff and hold the hand to four odd. Another way to hold the hand down to four is to lead another club. The declarer ruffs and leads the king of trump. East wins with the ace and returns the king of clubs. South ruffing with the Jack of spades. South leads the queen of spades, and follows with a small heart to the jack in dummy. Os course, East must ruff this trick with the six of spades or he will lose it. That takes out the last outstanding trump and the declarer has the remainder of the tricks. This is rather a tantalizing hand and I would suggest that you lay it out and try its many variations. (Copyright, IMS. NEA gtrtlct. Inc.)
