April 13.—1n huge barns h; r h once were factories and on muddy training lots outside, the C r >ie Brothers-Clyde Beatty Circus today put the finishing touches on its acts in preparation for the road. Housing a circus in winter quarters is anew experience for Rochester. Formerly, Peru was the only Indiana town with that distinction. Last fall, several Rnrhe.ster business mon offered financial backing to Jess Adkins and Zack Terrell, long the guiding hands of the Hagen-back-Wallace and other Ringling shows. Mr. Terrell and Mr. Adkins signed ! Clyde Beatty, the animal trainer; then organized the Indiana Circus I Corp. The circus has been built j from equipment purchased from defunct shows, from new animals and attractions, and from acts which appeared at the World's Fair. Allen Kimr, an animal trainer who outshines Beatty, was one of those who brought his act from Chicago. With the show preparing to leave I on its summer tour, a preview was held Thursday for the press. Beatty put 10 tigers and 20 lions ] through their paces. He cracked his j whip, poked an insignificant looking i chair in their laces and made them ! do their tricks. Thf arena was cleared and King performed. Through the chutes came 1G lion;;, two black leopards, j three pumas, two spotted leopards and four tigers. King touchel a match to a hoop the size ol a rain barrel. Flames shot up around the edge. At a command. “Lightning,” a small black leopard, leaped through the hoop. Then "Rajah,” a 600-pound j tiger rolled a drum across the cage. When Cole brothers got Beatty: and King, Ha genbaek-Wallace brought Maria Rasputin, daughter of Russia's mad Monk,” to Peru to train their animals. Miss Rasputin was bitten by a bear two days ago and sent to the hospital. Rochester people think it was just a publicity stunt. ‘PRANK’ EARNS YEAR ON FARM 18-Year-Old Youth’s Plea for Mercy Ignored by Judge Baker. For what L. L Dickerson, Indianapolis Public Librarian, called a “kids prank.” Joseph Zupan. 18. of 749 N. Haugh-st. yesterday was sentenced by Criminal Judge Frank P. Baker to one year's imprisonment on the Indiana State Farm. The boy was caught with two others in the Haughville branch of the Public Library in an alleged attempt to rob it, but they had taken nothing. When arrested young Zupan had a severe injury on his leg and he was sent by Judge Baker to City Hospital where he had been for the last three months undergoing treatment that probably saved his leg from amputation. Young Zupan pleaded his case with the judge, asking to be sent back to the hospital “for them to find out what's wrong with me.” “Judge." he said, “There's something wrong with me. I keep trying to take poison.” “Who keeps you from it?” the judge asked. “The attendants.” “They should have let you have it.” retorted the judge. "I wish there was some place I could send you and other sub-normal persons. But if Id let you go you'd either be dead or in trouble within 90 days. I'll send you to the farm for a year to teach you what prison is.” ASK $1,300,000 FOR INDIANA ARMORIES Straub and Thompson to Seek U. S. Funds. AdJ. Gen. Elmer F. Straub and Maj. Normal L. Thompson will go to Washington Tuesday to seek a $1,300,000 appropriation for the construction of 10 new armories in Indiana, one in Indianapolis. Anew naval militia armory would be built in Indianapolis, according to plans, and an addition to the National Guard Armory on N. Pennsylvania-st. Other new armories would be built in Evansville. Michigan City. Darlington. Attica. Colfax. Newcastle, Columbia City. Spencer and Gary. The money, it was said, would come from the 570.000.000 set aside for construction of armories from the $4,800,000,000 work relief bill funds. Police arrested a Negro last night when she leaped from a car and ran between two houses at St. Clair and N. East-sts. Because ‘.she” had a bass voice they thought “she” was a “he” and took her to police station where she ’ gave “her” name as Alice White She” maintained “she was a woman, but police still suspected her of being a “he” and were about to have “her taken to City Hospital for examination when she confessed “he” was Albert White. Police held him for vagrancy under high bond, suspecting him of bemg one of the “girls” who have been strong-arming men on the North Side recently. WAREHOUSING ACT IS ‘DUD/ STATE FEARS Failure of Bill to Provide Fund-Raising Powers May Be Costly/ Scores of deserving Democrats probably will not get jobs and Indiana farmers probably will not get the relief they anticipated in passage of the gram warehousing act in the recent session of the General Assembly. The warehousing act, sponsored by Rep Carl G. Wood, Indianapolis, provided for licensing and state supervision of grain warehouses in which Indiana farmers could store their grain without resorting to long freight hauls to other states. The measure, passed with an emergency clause so it could take efTect immediately, was to enable farmers to enter into contracts with the Federal government. The government required storage of the contract grain in supervised warehouses and since few in Indiana qualified, the contracting farmer was faced with a big freight bill in addition to storage charges. There’s Job Angle, Too Too. there was the angle of jobs for deserving Democrats and there are a lot of party workers who have not yet been rewarded with patronage. The act provides for appointment of inspectors, clerks and other assistants who would work under the Department of Commerce and Industry. The license fee for the approximately 100 warehouses that could qualify is $lO. It. was assumed that the Department of Commerce and Industry would be able to charge in addition, enough to pay for operating of the law, but it was learned today that Attv. Gen. Philip Lutz Jr. has ruled that all the department can collect is the $lO warehouse license fee. C an't Pay Expenses The sum of SIOOO for initial expense was appropriated in the bill, but it was specified that this SIOOO must be repaid the state general fund from receipts. Thus, the department is faced "ith the fact that revenues will be only SIOOO and that will not pay administration expenses.
