ARE you With me from yesterday. Remember, we ve got Jinx ! up in the air for his first flight in a Curtiss “F” boat. Well, Jinx is 1 just ready to make a turn and come ! into land on the bay. He made a regular student’s turn to the left . . . broad and shallow, banked only a few degrees. He took in the whole bay getting around . . . and came down for his first landing 200 yards off the beach. The ; little boat glided In evenly, the angle I of glide seemed correct ... he leveled off, the keel kissed water . . . beautiful landing! The “F” boat slid along the surface and just bej fore coming to a standstill acted the j way every “F” boat did . . . pitched violently fore and aft. If Jinx had known this pitching was the “naj ture of the beast” all would have been well. But the bouncing up and down must have scared him, for he opened

the throttle and tore away to another takeoff. The "F" boat acted like a wild mustang trying to dislodge a nder, but it finally lurched into the air again. This time his left-hand turn was shorter and sharper and when he reached the right place, down he came for another landing. This one was terrible! The hull smacked the water and bounced 20 feet into the air. She settled back toward the water . . . and on went the motor again . . . but there wasn’t enough power to prevent another terrific smash

... a series of them, one sfter the other . . . until the ship was going fast enough to climb into the air once more. The next time Jinx came in to land the hull hit the water nose down and spray hid the actor and his steed from sight. First one wing low, then the other, then a little more speed and around again for another try. Jinx then made a dozen more attempts to land . . . and each was worse than the previous one. The rescue boat was skittering around warily . . . the excitement on the beach was tremendous . . . pilots and instructors stopped smoking, their eyes glued to the plane leaping and cavorting about the bay. But again spac<- is >o short . . .
so well have to see what finally happened to Jinx in tomorrow's column. He's in a tight spot now, isn't he? QUESTION: Why do planes have control sticks? Why not a steering wheel? This young man must be rather behind times. Steering wheels are very widely used. On 6mall ships, particularly open Jobs, there’s hardly enough room In the cockpit for a wheel. All large transport planes use the wheel.
