BRIDGE RULES EXPLAINED FOR CITY'S PLAYERS

McKenney Tells What and How You Have to Do It Now. BY \VM. E. M KENNEY Timt Rri4** fdltor Srr.t*rr Air.rir.n Brill*. r.azue In recent days the bridge players of the country have had an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the new scoring and laws which became effective April. 1, for ron•ract bridje throughout the world. Some of the Important changes in the law are as follows: Dummy is now referred to as declarer's partnrr Do not pick up any of your cards during the deal, otherwise the cards must be redealt. If a plaver can name a card that Is dealt to another player, there must be anew deal; so be careful about showing the bottom card. Bid Must Be Sufficient Unless overrailed, an Insufficient bid must be made sufficient; and even though corrected by the player before attention is called to it, it carries a penalty. If you make it sufficient in the lowest sufficient bid of the same denomination, partner is barred from the bidding for one round However, you have the right to make it sufficient in any other suit or no trump and to bid for as many tricks as you wish, in which cause partner is barred from further bidding in that hand. When doubling or redoubling, if a player names an incorrect number of tricks 01 a tvrong denomination, he is deemed to have doubled the correct bid and partner is barred from one round. 'For example: The last bid made was two hearts and now the doubler says: “I double two diamonds ") A Serious Change The pass out of turn has undergone a serious change, in the old laws a pass before a bid was made drew no penalty. Now', however, it ■ bars the offender for one round (Supposing it is your partner’s deal and you by mistake pass. The bidding reverts back to your partner and now he had better bid the full j extent of his hand, because even | though he should make a forcing ! two bid, you would have to pass when it came around to you the first time—and it might not get around the second time.) When an out of turn call is made after the bidding has been opened, j the partner of the offender is j barred from further bidding in that hand The new laws provide that a player now can bid eight, which is automatically one more trick than ! he can make. This law was made not to enable you to ake a sacrifice against a grand slam, but simply to permit you to make a bid without being forced to bid seven no trump. If you bid eight over an opponent’s grand slam bid, the opponent who first bid the suit last named by his side, has a right to cancel your eight bid. which bars the offender and his partner from further bidding; but the non-offending side msv then proceed with the bidding. Os course they can also force you

THE npxt day, Tuesday, as Jesus entered the Temple, a group of chief priests, scribes, and patriarchs approached, hoping to ensnare Him. They inquired of Jesus the nature and origin of His mission. pretending that they were competent judges of His claims. But Our Lord clearly showed them that if—as they themselves confessed—they were not able to decide whether the baptism administered by John the Baptist was of Heaven or not. He had a perfect right not to consider them competent judges of the character and origin of His own mission. To Pharisees who asked Him whether it w'as lawful to give tribute to Caesar, Our Saviour answered that they could not have accepted the coins of the emperor without recognizing his sovereignty and thereby declaring it lawful to pay him tribute. The Pharisees went, away, dumfounded at His wisdom. Jesus next put the Sanhedrists to rout by asking them how the Messiah could be the son of David, and yet bp called "Lord" by David himself. Afterward, Jesus left the Temple, foretelling its utter destruction.

NEXT: Jesus prophesies Jerusalem’s doom

to play it at right doubled, as both the eight bidder and his partner are barred from further bidding. Use the standard formulae in calling: “Pass” (avoid “I pass” or “I am satisfied”); “One heart” (avoid “I bid”); “One no trump” (avoid “without” or “without a trump”); “Double” (avoid stating the number of tricks or the denomination doubled); “Six spades” (avoid “little slam"). The new laws call attention to the fact that it is improper to use a pre-arranged bidding convention not generally understood. Partnership agreements regarding bidding or playing conventions must be carefully explained to the opponents, and may be barred by a club or committee. While the old laws forbid the examination of a quitted trick, the new laws provide that if you look at a quitted trick, your opponents score a 50-point premium. Declarer’s partner (dummy) has been granted increased rights. If he does not intentionally look at the face of a card in a player’s hand, he may call attention to any irregularity, such as calling attention to

an opponent’s revoke, or an opponent’s lead out of turn. If a player fails to play to a trick anl plays to a later trick, his side has to transfer one of their tricks won in play to the opponents.
