The writer, still able to hear the roar of gas spoutin ft into the air at the rate of about 232.Vi0.000 cubic feet daily ; • from a single plant, can vouch for, the fart, that the hue and cry does 1 not represent idle prattle. Originally the gas reserve in the : field was estimated at a little more I than 16 trillion ruble feet. Todav I the supply is calculated to be around , 12 trillion cubit feet. A large pro- ! portion which has been recovered to date constitutes gas that has j been dissipated to fulfill selfish ends. The chief contributions to this j reckless waste, most oil and gas pcop'.p agree, are th p operators of .stripping plants. A stripping plant extracts the gas from the ground, runs it through various departments, collect* on p -third of natural gasoUn* for every 1000 cubic feet of natural gas., sends the gas itself through pipes and blows it into the air. Wasted by Stripping Plants These stripping plans, and there are quite a few of them, shoot in the air dally natural gas equivalent to the entire domestic and commercial consumption of the United States. An idea of what this waste | amounts to in round figures may be had by pointing out that the daily domestic and commercial consumption at present is a little more than one billion cubic feet. Large oil and gas companies generally have been deploring the menace of the stripping plan by news- 1 paper advertising and by invective. One oil company official declared that th- natural gas production V'ealiaed through stripping operations *is a child born of rape.” Within the last fortnight the situation has undergone some change. A bill was unanimously passed by the lower branch of the Texas Legislature which provides for the elimination of stripping operations. Early enactment of the measure into law will write finis to one of Texas’ appaling chapters. Four Other Prime. Uses Tn addition to the wasteful use. via shippers, there are four other prime uses for natural gas, as follows: 1. Pipe line transportation for domestic and industrial purposes 2 Casinghead casoline manufacture, which means extracting gasoline fmm the gas w r hich comes to the surface when an oil w r ell is drilled. 3. Carbon black manufacture to obtain its product. 4 Production of oil which requires the ens as a motivating force and an aid to lifting the oil. f Prilled for Oil Probably one of the reasons for the outcropping of the gas waste was the fact that many individuals had drilled wells in the Texas Panhandle with the idea of getting ail. After expending considerable time and money they discovered, when the strike was made, that they had a gas rather than an oil well. This put them tn a distressed position, as they had no means of getting the product to market. Within a few months quite a fewother persons found themselves in the same position. Consequently, the aggregate investment of these persons was built up to rather sizable proportions. After clamoring for relief they finally received it through the legitimizing of stripping plants. Such plants paid less than would the pipe line companies, but any figure was better than having the well remain idle. It was not rralized at the outset that this ogre of waste would reach the proportions which it did. The concern of the large com pames over the popping-off of the gas was justified by the huge investment they had made in the natural gas industry. It has been calculated that pipe line companies alone have spent $2.500000.000. These companies hfive 81.000 miles of mains and laterals in use. exclusive of those inside town and city limits. The ‘'stripping” plant in the background strips one-third of a gallon of ga.sohne from every 1000 cubic feet of pms. After the gasoline is extracted, the gas is piped several hundred feet away and blown into the air. For the three months ended Feb. 28 it is estimated that the daily average gas wastage in the Texas Panhandle field was 1,059.800.000 cubic feet.

3450 WILL GET ARMY TRAINING

Work on the rebuilding of the Vermont-st bridge over Pogue's Run is expected to begin some time next week, according to Henry B.
