A Woman’s Viewpoint BY MBS. WALTER FERGUSOV

A PRETTY 19-year-old girl ran away the other day and got married. Her mother weeps, her father curses and vows he'll never let her darken hi! door again. Sounds medieval, doesn’t It? And proves, I think, that the father lacks common sense. I suppose no parent advocates elopements, but after all, marriage Is a very personal business. Also I happen to know this particular parent. He raised cain every time a young man came calling. Nobody was ever quite good enough for his girl. Although they are middiecla s people, he expected her to capture a rich and famous husband, girl. Although they are middle•_s probably would diagnose his malady as plain ordinary Jealou y, from which men with only one daughter often sutler. There is only one thing for the man and woman to do when faced with a situation of this sort—meet it gracefully. You can t unmarry the two by storming at them, or by shutting the door in their faces. When you do that, you only make a fool of yourself and prove to the neighbors that your daughter is a chip off the old block. And why should we look upon elopements as tragedies or believe they are fated to end disastrously? Many of the happiest marriages have begun in just such a hit-or-miss fashion. Sometimes the youngsters run away because it appeals to them as romantic—but more often it proves a lack of understanding and sympathy on the part of the parents. Perhaps they did not encourage the girl to bring her boy friends into the home, or they may have persistently found fault with her companions, or mayV’o they only teased and joked about

adolescent love affairs—always a mistake. As for the mother, she should dry her tears and put her foot down once and for all. I know one thing: The house that could not hold my daughter could not hold me. Whenever a husband ordered a child of mine out, I'd walk out. too. No modern woman should have to endure that kind of tyranny.

SUPER SALESMANSHIP STUNT WORKED BY BRITISH MAGAZINE

One of the latest super-sales-manship stunts being worked here. The Indianapolis Times learned today, is that of a British magazine which sends postal cards to the prospect telling him that in the current Issue is a genealogical article concerning his family which he “can not afford to miss.” Curious prospects are unable to obtain the magazine except by sending $1 50 by mail for the subscription or ordering it through a local dealer, because the magazine Is not available at either the State Library or the Indianapolis Public Library, and is not stocked by news stands. Miss Freda Woerner, in charge of the reading room at the Central Library, said that although she had received many queries concerning the publication, it is not listed in any directory she has seen. At one Indianapolis Arm, several officials received the postal cards telling them that the current issue would have an article on their families.

TARZAN AND THE LION MAN

Benumbed by fright, Rhonda watched the gorillas fighting with clubs and battle-axes, talons and fangs. “They have freed Wolsey from the Tower,” said one of the harem inmates, “and now he Is leading The Maker's party against the king. They've never fought so fiercely.”

“I have heard that The Maker wants the hairless one for himself,” said the one called Catherine of Aragon, pointing at Rhonda. “If he gets her, that will be the last any one will ever see of her—which suits me.” The old she snarled and bared her fangs at the American girl.

The frightful din of battle resounded now on the floor below, In the very palace itself. Then it surged upward until it was heard plainly outside the closed door of the gorilla king's harem. Suddenly the door was thrown open and several big bull gorillas burst into the room.

"Where is the hairless one?” the leader demanded. “Ah, there she is!” He came up to Rhonda and seized her roughly. She did not know whether she was being claimed for King Henry or for The Maker. In either case, her fate would be the same —a fate too appalling!
