Catherine Merrill Group Celebration Set at Brown Home. BY ELIZABETH CARR ON a servlg table in Mrs. Hilton U. Brown's home next Saturday, a gilded, threae-tiered centerpiece in the shape of a wedding cake, will bear 50 ligmed tapers, marking the golden anniversary of the foudlng of the Catherine Merrill Club. Mrs. David Smith loaned the centerpiece to the club lor the birthday party. When the members and former members assemble at Mrs. Brown's they will recall the founding of the club 50 years ago in the Bates House, the old home of Mrs. Hervey Bates. It was here that a group of women who had been attending Mias Merrill's classes in literature decided to form a club. Those who had been in the class for two years were to be eligible. Met at Merrill House After the organization, meetings were held at the home of Miss Merrill, which in later years became the Catherine Merrill Bchool. Club members particularly are looking forward to seeing again the portrait of Miss Merrill painted by T. O. Steele. It hung in the Merrill home until the death of Miss Merrill, when her sister, Mina, gave It to Butler University to be hung in the room in which Miss Merrill’s neice, the late Katharine Graydon, taught English. The portrait is being loianed by Butler University for the club birthday. On the 45th anniversary the club gave a set of books, world encyclopedias, to the Catharine Merrill school in which they placed book plates bearing a miniature reproduction of the Steele painting, and inscribed with “From the Catharine Merrill Club to the Catharine Merrill School in Memory of Her Whose Name We Bear.” Paper on Program Miss Mary Louise Shipp, daughter of the club's first president, Mrs. Joseph R. Shipp, will read to the group a paper, “Miss Merrill and the Making of a Book.” Miss Shipp had helped Muss Merrill arrange material for a book, “The Man Shakespeare and Other Essays,” which the club published. In keeping with the memorial program. Miss Victoria Montani will play old music on the harp. Assisting Mrs. Brown with hospitalities for the day will be Mrs. Thomas C. Howe, Mrs. Perry H. Clifford and Mrs. Henry. Kahn. Mrs. Samuel H. Fletcher, the present president, will officiate.
